    1. [ NB ] Alexander Montgomery Family Genealogy
    2. msbailey
    3. I am looking for information on the Montgomery Family of St. John NB. The following newpaper accounts refer to John Mongomery as living in St. John in the late 1800"s. Montgomery - Ellis: Matilda Montgomery was born circa 1815 in New Brunswick. Her marriage circa 1836 to Ephraim Ellis of Digby, Nova Scotia may have taken place in New Brunswick. Their son, William Ensley Ellis was born 1837 in Pittsfield Corner New Brunswick, another source points to the Salisbury area. Possible that Pittsfield Corner was a Parish of St John or Lancaster. One of the United Empire Loyalists who came to this province about the time of the evacuation of New York in 1788 (sic) was Alexander MONTGOMERY who was one of the grantees of the old city of Parrtown. According to the 'Toronto News', 7th inst., the heirs are no laying claim to a valuable property in the heart of New York City and their chance of success are good. John MONTGOMERY was seen in his law office in the Walker building yesterday, but was not in a position to give any information beyond the fact that Alexander Montgomery, before coming to the province, gave a long lease of some fifty acres of land, which is now in the centre of New York City and that the lease had expired some 15 or 20 years ago. - St. John 'Sun' > > The Toronto 'Evening News', Aug. 7th: In 1778, before the British evacuation of New York, Alexander MONTGOMERY, in return for a lump sum in cash, gave a 99 year lease of 56 acres of land in what is now the heart of the city. Shortly afterwards, Mr. Montgomery fled to New Brunswick with other United Empire Loyalists. This Alexander Montgmery is probably one of the original grantees of Parrtown (old St. John). John MONTGOMERY, barrister-at-law was called upon at his residence last eve. by a representative of 'The Telegraph'. He stated that he had heard of the matter and expected to have the full particulars very shortly, but did not think that his family was interested. >

    3. Caution when using this site--a lot of the data contained are from sources that are not necessarily well-researched. There are numerous errors contained in these data on my families; they have been copied from sources that are not reliable resources, such as, LDS CD's etc. e.g. -- Joseph Rockwell did not marry Mary of Matilda Dickinson; he m. Maria Dickinson (d/o Arden Dickinson & Sally/Sarah Campbell); he did not die March 30, 1868 but more like 1830 or so. Maria remarried in 1833 to Dennis Hale and had children by him. When Dan Johnson was still alive I paid for his extraction service of the NB papers for the name Rockwell--there is no mention of Joseph Rockwell in any newspapers after 1830. It is disheartening to see these same "facts" reprinted over and over when they are inaccurate. So don't use this site as a source when preparing your family tree--more like a guide, ok? -- polly shaw

    3. When copying a PDF file from "MOST" websites, it can be right-clicked and saved to disc, or, if you are lucky enough to be on a Mac, you left click and drag to desktop. Then you can open it using MS Word and it becomes a word-processing document rather than just a PDF. PDFs will also "copy/paste" unless the owner of the website has protected them. jim

    2. Hello List, I am looking for the parents of George Gallagher b. abt 1853 as well as his siblings. George was married to Ellen McCafferty, and lived in Rothesay. I'm hoping he was a brother to Peter Gallagher who married Jane Montgomery 05 Oct 1879 in Saint John. Peter and Jane lived in Model Farm, Quispamsis. I have been looking for something to prove George and Peter were siblings, and what other siblings they may have had. Both Peter and George worked for the CPR, and they were both sectionmen. Surely their must be connection out there somewhere! I also have information to share with anyone that can help me. Thanking everyone in advance! Debra in NB

    1. Re: [ NB ] Books we own site address!!!!
    2. Sharyn Hay
    3. Just a clarification here. Books We Own is not affiliated in any way with the Canada GenWeb Project. It is a Rootsweb volunteer project as defined: "Books We Own is a list of resources owned/accessed by individuals who are willing to look up genealogical information and e-mail or snail mail it to others who request it. This is a free service - volunteers may ask for reimbursement of copies and postage if information is provided via snail-mail. The project began in 1996 as a way for members of the ROOTS-L mailing list to share their resources with one another. Today, there are over 1500 volunteers." However, there are many county GenWeb sites with their own free lookups and book lists for both USA and CAN (and others), so check the World GenWeb Project http://worldgenweb.org/, the US GenWeb Project http://www.usgenweb.org/, and the Canada GenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~canwgw/ for further book resources.
