    1. [ NB ] Joseph Stevens - loyalist
    2. Janet Armstrong
    3. I am looking for information on Joseph Stevens - apparently a Loyalist. Joseph appears on an old list by W.O.Raymond of the "First English Proprietors of Woodstock" .(online through the Carleton County Hist.Society) . His name appears as receiving 150 acres on Lot 29, just outside of Woodstock. I believe that there may be a connection between this Joseph Stevens and John Stevens who married Mary Elizabeth Ackerman in 1816 in Fredericton. Joseph Stevens was a witness, as well as C.Ackerman ( Mary E's father ).The Stevens' later moved briefly to Wakefield. Thanks Janet

    3. Janet... There's this taken from the Vital Stats from NB Newspapers by Daniel Johnson - so there could be more records in New Jersey on Joseph Stevens. http://archives.gnb.ca/APPS/NewspaperVitalStats/FullTextResults.aspx?culture=en-CA " The following list contains the names of prominent Loyalists of New Jersey against whom proceedings were instituted in the counties named during the Revolutionary war for the purpose of confiscating their property for joining the New Jersey Royal Volunteers or for giving aid and comfort to the adherents of the Crown. Lawrence A. ACKERMAN, Derrick ACKERMAN, David D.ACKERMAN, John J. ACKERMAN, all of Bergen; ..... *Joseph STEVENS*, Wm SMITH, Stephen SKINNER, Cortlandt SKINNER, Thomas SMITH, James SHOTWELL, Cecil SARGEANT, all of Middlesex; .... " There are also 2 Land Petitions with the name Joseph STEVENS attached to them: 1805 Charlotte Co. & 1813 York Co. The Land Petitions are wonderful sources. There's also a Land Grant for a Joseph STEPHENS 1784 Sunbury Co. Have found no connection to a John Stevens - nor to anyone else, yet. 3. Hmmm.... not sure I can agree with the FamSearch listing. Though I can't dispute the Carlisle parents, the dates for James are incorrect. This is not the James b. 1778. He did died in 1869, but this is James A. Starkey, b. @1801 (see Johnston Parish census, 1861, aged 60). Also, his parents, Mordecai Starkey and Mary Ballentine Ackerly/Akerly, were not married until 27-Apr-1797 (Gagetown Anglican). At the time, Mary was just 17, with her birthdate being 23-Mar-1772, in New York. If this presumption on FamSearch record were correct, then Mary Ackerly could NOT be mother of James Starkey. Given that Mordecai was b. @1756, perhaps and argument COULD be made for an earlier wife? 1. Re: [ NB ] Catherine Carlisle (wife of James Starkey) - Queens County
    2. S. Olfert
    3. Hi Jared & Jerry, Jared's right... I didn't look at the individual files closely enough... just concentrated on names of Catherine's parents. Relooking at the research on new.FamSearch... What's taking place is that all of the records are gathered (good, bad & the impossible! ) :>) for that one person and placed in one file so that everything is shown at once - the varying birth dates, places, etc. - so that the records can be edited (but not changed from their original form) and the correct information inserted. Now that I'm awake, I do see what you're saying with the marriage of Mordecai Starkey & Mary Ackerly. There is a marriage date of 1797 Gagetown (along with all of the "about" and "before" dates). So checking the file for their son James Starkey, I realized that I had taken his dates of 1778-1869 from what was in front of me and did not go into his file to see what else was in there for information. I now find that one of the persons who had submitted the information on James & his siblings was 20 years off on quite a few of the children and had calculated the births based what he thought the age of the father, Mordeca was. So as well as the old record of c1778 for James, there is also the birth date of 13 Jun 1801 Cody, Queens Co. - which goes with what you found, Jared, for approx. age for James on the 1861 census. As for James's parents, Mordecai is shown with everything from a definite date of 04 July 1756 New Jersey to bef 1795 of Queens Co. NB. Mary Ackerley's birth is shown from 1768 to 23 Mar 1772 New York to 1795 of Queens NB. The files are just waiting for someone to go in and edit them with the correct information. Catherine Carlisle's records, on the other hand, are not so all over the place. Kate Carlyle is also shown; birth date 1807 to May 1807; born NB to of Johnston, Queens Co. NB; died 1890 to Feb 1890; bur Coles Island, Queens, NB. Her parents have only had one submission for records - this doesn't mean that they're right, it just means that this is what someone has found or calculated so far: Robert Carlisle born abt 1782, of Queens Co., NB Elizabeth Lambert born abt 1786, of Queens Co., NB Thanks, Jared. I found this to be quite interesting, but what is most interesting are the remedies for the ailments.............Edd gout / performed - put right stocking on in morning croup / performed - plugging with hair Cure for croup: bore a hole in a fruit tree, then make a plug to fit the hole. Place the patient against the tree and place the end of his hair in the hole and insert the plug. After cutting off the hair, pound the plug in more securely (M.W., Fs 55, bookkeeper, Eng., Wayne, 1957).
