Hi List, I am looking for the Westmorland Co. marriage c1856 for George RYAN and Barbara (unknown). Believe she was born in PEI and he in NB. If someone could do a lookup for me, I'd appreciate it. Shirley
Hi List, I'm wondering if someone might have a copy of the book *Round the Chignecto Hearth *by Trueman. I'm interested in the information on Burton MARTIN. Thank you. Shirley
Hi List, I am looking for the marriages for Burton Allen MARTIN bet the years 1901 - 1925. They are not on the NB Archives webiste nor on the Nova Scotia site. Any place else that I can look?? Shirley
The occupation "Literary" was part of the 1880 US Census code as follows: Occupational Code 017 = Authors, lecturers, and literary persons That said, based on other searches, she was associated in some way with the literary (literature) profession. Perhaps, in many ways. She could have been a literary critic or agent, a writer, a speaker, or a literature teacher (even as a private tutor), and still been occupationally classified as a "Literary". The exact work is probably near impossible to determine. It surely means she was well-educated, and well "read". Not having all the connections, initially, at my fingertips, the following search notes are a bit disorganized, but lead to information being sought... An Edwin Cougle, aged 22 on 28-Oct-1850 (about right age), arrived in New York Harbor. He had departed London, England for New York, aboard the "Switzerland", place of origin listed as Canada. He appears, apparently, in 1851 Census in two location (or two Edwin Cougles of the same age in New Brunswick? On is in Sussex, Kings Co, the other in Burton, Sunbury Co. The one in Sussex is with parents? Heniphon? and Mary Cougle. The one in Burton is lodging in the home of Archibald McLean (aged 50) and his wife, Hannah. Would this be a double enumeration or were there in fact two of this name enumerated in 1851? In 1890/91, Frances, Edwin's widow, was living at "The Clarendon" (hotel) in DC. What was Edwin's occupation? Found listing for an Edwin b. 1829, living in Sunbury Co in 1851, and a Rev. Edwin Cougle, who died in 1871, in St John, NB. A search of NB Newspapers (Dan Johnson's database), finds an Edwin Cougle, Esq., M.D., died in Feb/Mar 1870, aged 42. Shows he died in Fredericton City. Could this be YOUR Edwin, or "the other" one found in 1851 Census? The one in Burton in 1851 was listed as an M.D., and born in Colony. The one in Sussex in 1851 was listed as a Doctor, born in NB. Both listed as 22 years of age. I can only presume this was a double enumeration, and that this Edwin is your Edwin, who died in 1870, in Fredericton City. How Frances ended up in DC is a good question... In 1898/99 DC directory, Frances is shown as "Cougle Frances F., pen. o. 1012 13th NW (pensioner, I presume) I've seen a Jane Cougle and Maude Cougle listed as daughters of this couple, but no POB or DOB information. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/w/a/r/Eve-Warner/GENE7-0022.html We know they were married in 1851, 11-Sep, in Sussex Vale, Kings Co. The 1851 enumeration is further explained in the death of Edwin's mother, Mary, as follows; 21-Apr-1894, St John, St John Co, St John Globe: Sussex (Kings Co.) April 21 - Mrs. Mary McLELLAN, widow of Xenophon COUGLE, died at the Knoll last night. The deceased lady was 91 years of age and was probably one of the oldest residents in the town. She was a sister of the late Henry HAYWARD of this place, Mrs. Wm PUGSLEY of St. John and mother of the late Dr. Edwin COUGLE of Fredericton. The funeral takes place tomorrow afternoon and the remains will be interred in the cemetery at Sussex Corner. So, the good doctor returned to NB, if he was ever in DC himself. My theory is that Frances went there after his death, perhaps initially living with or near one of these two mystery daughters? Or, her own family? Much can also be gleaned from a very detailed family history, published in the Kings County Record on 04-May-1894, the link at PANB is: http://archives.gnb.ca/APPS/NewspaperVitalStats/Details.aspx?culture=en-CA&guid=3e86415e-a9e4-441d-8b80-f4d2f312a2db&r=1&ni=67225 This clearly states that his widow, Frances, was living in DC with one daughter, Maud. That the couple also had one or two daughters that had died in infancy. 1900 US Census for Washington DC shows: Francis F. Cougle, roomer, b. Mar-1835, Can/Eng., widowed her daughter: Francis Maud Cougle, roomer, b. Dec-1864, Can/Eng., roomer, single no occupation listed for either. In 1910, Maude, still single, residing with John and Ella Chester in DC. Born Canada, no age listed, no occupation (may not have been present for census enumeration?) Given Maude seems to be the only surviving child of the couple, and born 1864, and still single in 1910 (aged 45-ish), chances are she never had children. If she did, she would have married between 1910 and 1920, as she does not seem to be found in 1920 census.
