Hi Beverly, The following is a link to Charles Benjamin's page on the "Canadian Great War Project's" web site. There is quite a lot of information about his service and it might give you a lead to some more personal data somewhere: http://www.canadiangreatwarproject.com/searches/soldierDetail.asp?ID=106602 Hope it helps. And the challenge grows. But it firms my resolve; the poor boy needs to be found. he was pretty much alone except for his elderly grandmother and absent parents; died too soon for a family of his own. His story matter to me and by the number of people here who have helped, it hits a note for all of us in memory of those kids and their terrible sacrifice, especially in WWI.. Thanks for sharing this; military history is far outside my experience. Beverley On Wed, Nov 4, 2009 at 11:53 AM, Jay Underwood <[email protected] > wrote: > The training was not necessarily local. Is anyone working on details of the family of Thomas and Agnes (McCully) Foot(e) formerly of Moncton, who left the province ca. 1882 for Baltimore MD? They had four childred, Ada, Harry, Frederic & Hubert. Agnes, a daughter of judge Jonathan McCully died in 1895 leaving Thomas an estate worth $30,000. He was alive in 1900 so I may find him in the 1900 US census...just thought I'd check here before subscribing to Ancestry again (and risk the wrath of the household finance officer!). He was chief accountant of the Intercolonial Railway when he was working in Moncton. He had been born in England in 1838 (I have no parentage yet) and arrived in Nova Scotia ca. 1854 to work in the office of the Nova Scotia Railway. Beverley, There is a time period - early 1900s - where bmd records are missing - and it appears that Charles Benjamin BARKER and his Mother's records are not showing online. I think because of the missing records during this time period that it has created a lot of family "mysteries". 1891 census: Grparents, Judson & Ida B.?? as well as Charles William BARKER, http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1891/001081-110.01-e.php?PHPSESSID=jcinrogupp2mcs134tiva2oss3&q1=barker&q2=judson&q3=&q4=&q5=&q6=&q7=&q8=&interval=20 1901 census: Judson & wife Isabella with an 11-year old nephew, Walter Thompson recorded with them. http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/View.jsp?id=8562&highlight=31&desc=1901+Census+of+Canada+page+containing+I%3Fbella+Barker 1911 census: Judson & Isabella BARKER (transcribed BARBER) with mother-in-law Margaret THOMPSON?? On the actual record, it appears more that Margaret was a Sister-in-law, born May 1864 (not 1834) age 46 (not 76) - transcribed incorrectly. http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/View.jsp?id=24711&highlight=44&desc=1911+Census+of+Canada+page+containing+Judson+Barber Concerning the War Memorial, it would be interesting to find who had sent in the information on Charle's father and what the source was. Thanks for his Shirley. I will correct the information on the war memorial as soon as I read the obits; I am very confident I have it right. yes the elderly grandparents raised him yet his perants were alive. Whether too ill, poor or something else is a mystery. TB was common then so perhaps they were incapacitated. The family arrived in Saint John on the Sidonia in 1874 from Scotland ( Thanks to Daniel Johnson) I ve just asked someone to check the Archives for obits but if they cannot; I'll try your suggestions. One time somebody gave me a simple look up as a random act that opened the floodgates to my irish family. I dont want to overuse it; it a fabulous resource. SInce Charles died within months of enlisting and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission doesn't have him their database, it is very probable that he didn't make it overseas. He may have been ill or training accidents were also common. You might check the Saint John newspapers for the report of his passing. ----- Original Message ----- From: "S. I have no personal knowledge of this tragedy. I checked a couple of history books I have (one on Barker's Point; the other on Devon) but found nothing relevant. I did find this info on the tombstones of these people but you probably already have this: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nbyork/cem/douglas.html And of course you can find his attestation papers at: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-119.02-e.php?image_u rl=http://data2.archives.ca/cef/well2/227623a.gif&id_nbr=24641 Other than that, I'm afraid I can't help you. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Beverley Clarkson Sent: 03 November 2009 14:38 To: [email protected] Subject: [ NB ] Barker family of Devon, NB I am tracing down the family of *John S Barker* ( 1831-1912) and my great great aunt,*Sarah Love Barker* (1840-1937) and their grandson *Charles Benjamin Barker* who was killed in WWI in 1918, less than 2 months after joining up. Hi Beverley, The War Memorial showing his father as Charles William may have been submitted by a family member. My GrUncle is also on this site with no information on parents so I was able send in their information as well as his marriage which was then added to the site. You will probably be able to contact them and correct the error. Charles B. is with his Grandparents on the 1901 & 1911 censuses. www.automatedgenealogy.com Since you have exact dates, I would contact the nearest local library to where they had been living. They may be able to send you the obits or you could try going on the boards to see if someone would be kind enough to retrieve them for you. As well, Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness is a great website. It' currently showing that there is someone who goes to the NB Archives and will copy Vital Records. http://www.raogk.com/newbrunswick.htm He helped me a while back. Good luck! Thanks all for your help and suggestions. Jay, I didnt know about the train wrecks; what an awful homecoming for those poor boys after all they d been through. Has anyone written about them? I did wonder if he had been wounded and finally died at home or en route. Anyone know how I could check the battles of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the spring of 1918? Shirley, as all the other evidence points to Charles Benjamin, including his attestion card naming his grandmother Sarah as next of kin, I think the War Memorial is in error. He was the son of Judson and isobella Barker. There are a number of sources for this. Thank you for double checking. I will try to get the obits next trip to Fredericton. I live in NS so its a long way to PANB. Beverley On Tue, Nov 3, 2009 at 11:01 PM, S. Beverley, I have a John Spafford Barker in my File. He had four sisters, Mary Anne (b. abt 1830) Sarah, Eliza and Caroline. Their parents were Amos Dow Barker (b. 6 June 1805) and Mary Dow. Amos was the great grandson of Planter Jacob Barker and Margaret Tenny, according to the following sources. 1. Cindy L. Bartlett. 2. "The Barker Family Tree", Anon; at PANB, Fredericton, NB, MN-300, MS-20/17. 3. Elizabeth Sewell and Elizabeth Saunders, "The New Brunswick Census of 1851, York County", Kingsclear, York County. I ll be thinking of him on Nov 11 as it seems noone else is likely to. But perhaps there were others in the family or someone might know where he was taken down. I ve done PANB, Veterans Affairs and Ancestry so am hoping someone has more personal infomration. -- Beverley Clarkson Sambro Head, Nova Scotia
One other thing... his burial is shown on the New Brunswick Archives site under "Cemeteries" but his death year has been inaccurately transcribed as 1916. Charles B. Beverley, The War Memorial online shows a Charles BARKER d. 13 Mar 1918; s/o Charles William BARKER. Could this be him?? It shows his birth place as North Devon, York Co., age 26 - right age, same place of birth as on his Attestation papers and that he was buried in the Nashwaaksis Douglas Rural Cemetery. http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers/sub.cfm?source=collections/virtualmem/Detail&casualty=2755847 It shows that he is on page 363 of the 1st WW Book of Remembrance - a copy of the page is on this site. The actual Book is in Ottawa with military guards attending the various Books of Remembrance. If this is him (although father's name is different than what you are showing), then you can email to the address shown on "to order a copy of this page..." and they will tell you which day of the year page 363 is turned and you can be there at that time. A check of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14 gives no place of burial for Charles Benjamin Barker in the First World War, which leads to the conclusion that he must have died and was buried in Canada, rather than in any of the European war cemeteries. There were several troop train wrecks in Canada towards the end of the First World War, mostly from Montreal westward, and he may have been a fatality in one of those accidents.
