Hello, One of my favorite free websites is the full view / Public Domain portion of Google Books. You can limit the searches to full view. http://books.google.com/ There are some interesting history and genealogy books that have been digitized. The wife of my stonewall is a Pendleton and the family is listed in the Pendleton genealogy done in 1911. They ended up in NB. It is great that I can download a pdf of the book. http://books.google.com/books?id=8pdJAAAAMAAJ Searching on "Brian Pendleton" brings up references within books like information in the History of the town of Stonington, CT. One of my distant cousins was a member of the NB Legislative Assembly and is listed in "The Canadian Parliamentary Companion". http://books.google.com/books?id=pTOz35cGWecC&pg=PA362 Some other interesting titles include "A handbook of information for emigrants to New Brunswick" gives a snapshot of NB around 1857 http://books.google.com/books?id=tfc-AAAAYAAJ "Biographical sketches of loyalists of the American Revolution" http://books.google.com/books?id=fWs4AAAAMAAJ "Foot-prints, or Incidents in early history of New Brunswick" http://books.google.com/books?id=VLINAAAAQAAJ 73 Eric ----- Start Original Message ----- Sent: Sun, 8 Nov 2009 08:53:15 -0700 From: "S. Hi List, There are some great free websites that I just naturally go to over and over... and over. I'd love to know what other sites are out there that I may be missing. A List of My Most Favourite Sites for New Brunswick research: *Provincial Archives of New Brunswick* http://archives.gnb.ca (one of the best!!) *Nova Scotia Historical Vital Statistics* www.novascotiagenealogy.com Many, many New Brunswickers can be found in these records - original documents. *Prince Edward Island (PEI)* - *The Island Register *www.islandregister.com Also, many came from Prince Edward Island - complete with pedigrees, censuses, etc. *PEI Archives : *Databases-Baptisms, Memorials, etc*.* http://www.gov.pe.ca/cca/index.php3?number=1006228&lang=<http://www.gov.pe.ca/cca/index.php3?number=1006228&lang> *Canadian Censuses - transcribed *www.automatedgenealogy.com 1851 NB, 1852 CA - Canada West (Ontario) & Canada East (Quebec) - we weren't a country until Confederation in 1867, 1901, 1906 Western Provinces only, 1911 - complete with original films + 1871 Kings Co. I get many by typing in St John - but only one for St. John under "port" and a few more under "location" so try variables in names or places. Here's the result for St John (no period) http://infowanted.bc.edu/results/ The advertisements are soooo interesting. *Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (raogk)* www.raogk.com Volunteers around the world will do vital stat, cemetery, obit lookups & more. *Record Search Pilot* http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html# found on www.familysearch.org (under Search Records). Hi Cleadie; Would you be please kind enough to send me the e-mail address for RCOGK. Thank you Grant ----- Original Message ----- From: "Beverley Clarkson" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, November 07, 2009 7:28 AM Subject: Re: [ NB ] Barker follow up Hi Cleadie I asked for help from RCOGK and she just found records that he died in France of pneumonia and has asked for me to have the official death records.. The obit said he was buried in Pickard but the latest cemetery record shows a tombstone for him, his grandmother and mother in Douglas rurual Cemetery. LAC records are vague as to his place of death but I have asked for them. It does seem he was buried in NB, so I will follow up, thanks for your information. Hi Cleadie I asked for help from RCOGK and she just found records that he died in France of pneumonia and has asked for me to have the official death records.. Greetings, This update is dedicated to Phoebe Elizabeth Toy (December 19, 1910-October 25, 2009). Dibby, as she was commonly known, was a local newspaper correspondent and well known historian. I vividly recall the old Toy homestead on Riverview Avenue from my visits in the 1970's and 80's with my Aunt who lived further up the Avenue. Dibby was the one you always went to for answers when searching property titles in the St. George area. Her wealth of knowledge of this area, particularly St. George, will never be replaced. The Pennfield Parish website has been updated once again. Here is a listing of what is new: What's new, November 6, 2009 Church & Cemetery Record Christ Church (Anglican) Cemetery - added obit. for Emma McKay. Military History No.34 Operational Training Unit (Remembering Those Who Served) - added five (5) names for those stationed at the base. RCAF Station, Pennfield Ridge (Remembering Those Who Served) - added one (1) name for those stationed at the base. People TOY, P. Elizabeth - "Women cleared health hurdle" added. Vital Statistics Pennfield Parish Strays (Who Are Buried Elsewhere) - added obit. for Lawrence D. Matthews. To find additional information and/or links please see "What's New" section on the main page. Recently visited the crash site of Ventura AE872 at Hills Mountain that claimed the lives of three (3) airmen from No.34 Operational Training Unit, Pennfield Ridge on 23 January 1943. As someone recently remarked to me: "I believe over the years, there has been a number of people who claimed to have 'found' it, but some of the old timers from the Hills Point area years ago could have taken people up that mountain to the site any time they wanted. It funny how easy we forget? It only takes one generation to lose interest." Attempts are also now being made to locate the crash site of Ventura AJ211 that crashed near Richibucto, NB 8 February 1943. This crash claimed the lives of three (3) airmen from No.34 Operational Training Unit Detachment, Yarmouth, NS (these airmen were scheduled to return to Pennfield Ridge in two (2) days time). The search is being made based on two eye-witness accountings of the crash and it is hopefully the site can be located while the witnesses are still living. A memorial stone and/or plaque recognizing the crash site is also in the works. In regards to the Richibucto crash, it's strange how one can contact another researcher who, as they say, ".is dedicated primarily to the casualties of Pennfield Ridge and their families" and receive no reply to your inquiries about contacting family members of those killed in this crash. Guess when they said "Do you think there may be a doubling of efforts in terms of the Pennfield air station" what they really meant is that they are the only one entitled to do said research. Any ways Pennfield Parish Military Historical Society will be celebrating its second anniversary on November 28th. In this short period of time we have acquired a large and vast amount of material on the former Pennfield Ridge Air Station and A-30 Canadian Infantry Training Centre (Camp Utopia). Our "Roll of Honour" now lists 69 airmen, 1 Royal Navy seaman (passenger aboard a Ventura aircraft when it crashed) and 6 civilians killed at the former Air Station and 6 military personnel killed at Camp Utopia. We took over hosting duties of the annual memorial service to remember those killed at these former two Charlotte County military bases in February of this year. Since that time we have located 23 family members of those killed and had the honour of having 6 attend this year's memorial service. There are nine (9) crash sites within New Brunswick involving Pennfield Ridge aircraft and, of those, only the one (1) in McAdam has been recognized with a proper memorial stone. McAdam Mayor Frank Carroll recently remarked to me "My sisters and I certainly enjoyed the War Memorial Service held on September 27th. Your organization is certainly to be commended for the time and energy they have put into, not only this event, but in the impressive display of military history and events that unfolded at Pennfield Ridge, N.B. during war time." Hopefully we can, in due course, have the other crash sites marked and recognized as well and then perhaps the next generation will not lose interest. Regards, G. Hi Janet, I wish I had the military information that you're seeking but I don't - hopefully, someone else on the list will. You said that you have a listing of his land grants - what about land petitions? The petitions can give genealogical background information which the grants do not contain such as marriage status, age, place of birth, military affiliation, etc. Plus, the men didn't usually petition just for land in the county they settled in but sometimes all over the place - don't ask me why. The c1812 time period shows a grant for a John STEVENS 1813 Northumberland (under the name John REIR - petition with 6 other men). Then there's a jump to the 1850s before the name John STEVENS/STEPHENS appears again. The record below is probably his death as you had given 1859. There are other writeups in the Vital Stats from NB newspapers which could be his children - you didn't give their names - but most of them, as well, were living in Fredericton with one saying that the daughter was of Carleton Co. & the father, John STEVENS, Fredericton. You would know for sure but I did notice on the 1851 Carleton Census that he had a daughter "Mirion". First of all , I 'd like to thank everyone who has responded in the past to my queries about the Stevens / Stephens family. I have made some progress , but am stuck with John Stevens/Stephens. The 1851 census for Wakefield , Cartleton Cty. says that John Stevens was born abt. 1791 in New Hampshire , and entered the colony (NB) in May of 1812. This seems to be a curious time for him to enter NB., as the war of 1812 officially started in June of 1812. On my database I have him listed as Capt. John Stevens, but of course, I did not reference this and do not know if this is accurate. Is it possible that he could have gone to New Brunswick as part of the New Brunswick Fencibles? I believe that he first went to Fredericton where he married Mary Elizabeth Ackerman in 1816, and later moved to Carleton County .I have his death date,(1859) and all of his children , and listing of Land Grants , but I am curious of his reasons for going to NB, as a possible way of finding his parents. Thanks for any help. Janet

I have deleted earlier messages on this subject, but I thought it had been reported that Charles was buried in NB. If so, was this just taken from a cemetery stone? It would have been unusual for someone to die in France during WW I to have been returned to NB. This was not even usual during WW II. The family plot often had the records of a vet on it, even when the body was not buried there.Just something to be clarified. :-) Cleadie ________________________________ From: Beverley Clarkson <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Fri, November 6, 2009 9:29:03 AM Subject: Re: [ NB ] Barker follow up > > > A further update: Charles Barker died of pneumonia in France. Hi Gloria, Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness www.raogk.com Choose a country/county - People who volunteer to do vital stats or obit lookups or will take cemetery pictures... they will let you know what they can do for you in a particular part of the world. You could be a volunteer for the Oshawa area. Shirley On Fri, Nov 6, 2009 at 4:35 AM, G D <[email protected]> wrote: > > Will you explain random acts ? Beverley... That's wonderful that someone was able to find the information for you - I LOVE random acts - I have been hugely blessed by many, many of the volunteers. Also, I never knew about the Maple Leaf Legacy site - it is wonderful. I would think that Charles probably died in New Brunswick - perhaps at the military base?? Good luck in the rest of your search. Shirley
Thanks to Shirley i followed up with a Random Act of Kindness and they found that Charles Barker died of pneumonia although we still do not have a place of death. This is the site: http://www.mapleleaflegacy.ca/en/index.php It also appears that his father was, as recorded, Charles William, the younger brother of Judson Barker who was married to the boy's mother and all living in the family home at the time. Exaplins why the grandparents raised him but makes the story sadder from the perspective of the times. And of course why my grandmother wouldnt tell me in the 50s. I ve asked for further records as to where he died but now have a way to remember him warmly next week. Thanks again for all your help. -- Beverley Clarkson Sambro Head, Nova Scotia
