I am seeking some clarification about the Address to Sir George Grey which recorded an individual's date of arrival or birth. The text below is from Auckland Passenger Arrivals on Library database:- "Addresses presented to Sir George Grey consist of individual's signature and their date of arrival in colony. Usually no more information is provided, including ship or port of arrival. Some may even be New Zealand born. In 1886 the Addresses presented (or acknowledgement) to Sir George Grey list this person as arriving in..." Were these signatures collected over many years (how many approximately), or importantly where they collected in 1886 only, and presented in bulk to Sir George Grey and finally what was the reason for doing this presentation please? If the names and signatures were collected in 1886, it will clarify for me which generation of my family arrived and when as two generations shared the same names. Thanking you in anticipation Chris in Melbourne

Thank you Seonaid for these links. I now know that the signatures and details were collected in 1886. This has allowed me to confirm an arrival date and a breakthrough in my research. chris ----- Original Message ----- From: "Seonaid Lewis" <Seonaid.Lewis@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz> To: <new-zealand@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2018 7:20 PM Subject: [nz]Re: Address to sir George Grey 1886 > The original address is Helen in Sir George Grey Special Collections on L2 > of Central City Library, Auckland > > The address is congratulating Sir George on his 74th birthday and were > collected in the months prior to his birthday. > > http://www.georgegrey.org.nz/TheCollection/CollectionItem/id/45/title/addresses-presented-to-sir-george-grey-kcb-by-the-european-and-maori-residents-in-the-province-of.aspx > > It is one document and often the date of arrival is included with the > signature > > If you wanted a copy then you could request from > arc@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz<mailto:arc@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz> > > Kind Regards SEONAID > > On 18/07/2018, at 17:35, Chris > <ckealy@ozemail.com.au<mailto:ckealy@ozemail.com.au>> wrote: > > I am seeking some clarification about the Address to Sir George Grey > which recorded an individual's date of arrival or birth. The addresses congratulating Sir George Grey on his 74th birthday and signatures by the residents of the Provincial District of Auckland were collected in the months prior to his birthday in 1886 birthday. So how many pages of signatures are there? I can only see one page of signatures. Is there a list online? Will the Auckland library place the entire document online like the 'Old Colonists Association Register' Auckland ? The handwritten register of the 'Old Colonists Association Register' Auckland [213 viewable pages] http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/msonline/images/manuscripts/NZMS/PDFs/web_NZMS_493.pdf W.R. Hi Olwyn et al The address is actually a decorative scroll – hence it is “one” page. All the names in the address have been indexed into the Auckland Area Passenger Arrivals http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/passengers/passenger.html No one has ever counted how many names there are – but the original scroll has been microfilmed and is available for viewing in the Central Auckland Research Centre. You can also take an image from the microfilm (including the decorative illuminated pages if you like). If you can’t come in yourself, then you are welcome to ask us to, using the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of our web page: https://www.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz/Pages/contact-general-enquiries.aspx It is on my wishlist that this unique resource is digitised and put online – however, it is not as yet on Auckland Libraries plan at this stage.
