To reduce noise on the list can I suggest that people do their "thank yous" in personal e-mails. Also when replying, delete anything that is unnecessary to repeat. IIRC Digests get sent out once the accumulated information is at a certain size. Needless noise just means digests get sent out more often which defeats their purpose. cheers, Megan
Noise ??? I am just glad to see some posts, personally I do not see the need to reduce them There are hardly enough to be considered to many or cumbersome Deleting the irrelevant parts of previous posts would be welcome but don't stifle posts please there are few enough as it is Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 15/07/2018 09:01, megan@pledger.gen.nz wrote: > To reduce noise on the list can I suggest that people do their "thank > yous" in personal e-mails. > > Also when replying, delete anything that is unnecessary to repeat. > > IIRC Digests get sent out once the accumulated information is at a > certain size. Hi Chris There are two ways to receive list posts List mode = you get every post as its posted, easy to handle and reply to if required, also easy to delete those of no interest to the subscriber Digest mode = dependent on the settings for the particular list, a digest is sent out when it reaches a specified size Given the lack of posts these days I have no idea why digest is even an option now, its completely unnecessary IMHO With digests, posts are all in a digest one after the other, to reply the subscriber *should* (but very often doesn't) copy the subject line for their post of interest to which they wish to reply, and replace the Digest & volume details in the subject line, then delete all parts of the digest that are not relevant to the post being replied to, add their reply and send You will very often see the digest & volume number in the subject line and the whole digest copied back to the list, which helps no one and just fills the archives with junk As you can see, digest is a lot more work and *very* often digest users forget to do the basics so you end up with strange and oft repeated subject lines that tell the reader nothing useful With all replies to the list its sensible to delete all parts of the post being replied to (in particular footer messages) that is what fills up a digest quickly with no useful information If you notice from your own reply, it contains all the original footer messages, taking up far more space than your own reply or the message you are replying to Each time a post or reply is posted to the list, the footers are added back automatically (to comply with regulations) so there is never a need for those to be copied back in a reply Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 16/07/2018 02:45, Chris wrote: > As a reasonably new lister, I've always been curious as to why headines > in some posts relate to the NZ Digest Vol..., Issue ....could you > explain further please about the Digest? > Chris
Thank you very much Nirvard for this comprehensive explanation about the Digest and how it works. I've been perplexed about the subject line and following some threads.
