I also have FTM and, as well as being able to change the default gender, you can also select under relationship in RHS- married, partner, spouse, friend etc. However when you synch to Ancestry, the same sex partner is referred to as "married to", and ancestry does not appear to have developed more options for relationships other than married. You also raise a good point about seeking permission to enter the relationship type. If the people are dead as in my family, I have elected to use "friend" as they were older people and private.
