    3. Hi Jackie The people in workhouses were generally enumerated as inmates, pauper or in some cases patients, sometimes by initials only though which can make it difficult to find an individual Those working or looking after the workhouse Master, Matron, Officer or servant etc In a general search just putting keyword Workhouse will find many thousands of hits, in each census you can search for relationship to head of household (ie Pauper) But the better way is to identify the location of the workhouse you are interested in for the period of that census, then go directly to the census year of interest and drill down to the workhouse So for example, using Ancestry for the 1861 census Search the card catalogue for 1861 census, select the Wales 1861 On the right select the county of interest Say you seek the Workhouse in Cardiff 1861 which is in St John Cardiff Select Glamorgan, then Cardiff St John from the Civil Parish drop down menu Scroll down the enumeration districts drop down menu and you will find the Institutions at the end of the list, including the workhouse This may also help http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/workhouse/ I would usually suggest visiting workhouses.org.uk (as does the link above) but it appears to have been hacked although that may be a false report Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 21-Jan-17 12:43 AM, Jackie Walles wrote: > Can anyone give me some ideas on how to access workhouse entries on the Welsh Census’ please, I never seem to have any success. > Jackie
