Good Morning, After the posts on the Auckland war memorial, I thought I would have a look - Many people from Norfolk Island served with the NZ Forces, An am pleased to find many of them on the Cenotaph, I am contributing what details I can, though I find it very strange the Fletcher Evelyn Quintal is on the N.Z. Cenotaph He served in Both Boar War and WWI with the Australian Forces The only record I can find of him in New Zealand is as follows, The New Zealand Court in 1904 in which Richard Seddon (ex 7th NZ Contingent) sought redress following a slur to his reputation by NZ Politician Taylor over an incident whilst Seddon was serving as a Captain in South Africa during the Boer War. Sarnim’s evidence in the case provides a significant resource. Sarnim opened his evidence in the case with the following - “I am at present A.D.C. (aide-de-camp) to his Excellency the Governor of New South Wales and also superintendent of the Constabulary Corps. I have the honorary rank of Captain in the New South Wales army. All ADC’s must hold that rank. My permanent place of residence is at Norfolk Island.” Does anyone have any hints as to why he would be recognized in New Zealand TIA Liz Norfolk Island
According to his NZ military file he was attached in South Africa to the 7th NZ Contingent for a period of time with the rank of Captain. His parent unit was the NSW Imperial Bushman.
