Hi All: Arthur Edward Savage died on 31/12/1953 aged 72y according to the Registrar-General’s online historic records (gradually restrict search range), and the date is confirmed by the Auckland (Waikumete) Cemetery, Auckland database which says he was cremated, and occupation Music Teacher. He was born 8 September 1881. An obituary from the Waikato Times in the New Zealand Biographies on fiche in the Turnbull / National library (NZ Bio 1955 vol 1 p 135) says Mrs V A Savage had died in Hamilton: “Mrs V. A. SAVAGE” “The death has occurred in Hamilton of Mrs Violett Ada Savage, aged 73. Mrs Savage came to Hamilton 54 years ago, with her husband from Australia. They lived in the city some time, but then moved south, living in Marton and Wanganui. During her early life Mrs Savage took a keen interest in politics and was associated with some of the prominent political figures of the day. She was prominent also in organising and running women’s organisations during the First World War and after the war was a volunteer nurse in an emergency hospital during the influenza epidemic. She returned with her husband to Hamilton in 1926. Until ill-health prevented her taking an active part she was well-known in golfing and croquet circles. Mrs Savage was also a life member of the Waikato R.S.P.C.A. and a keen supporter of all its activities. The late Mr Savage was prominent in music activities in the city for many years, conducted bands, both here and elsewhere, and was an adjudicator. He died about 12 months ago. Mrs Savage is survived by one daughter, one son, and nine grandchildren.” (end of obituary). Violet Ada Savage died 1955 aged 73y and is buried in Hamilton East Cemetery. But while the Registrar-General has her as Violette Ada died 8 May 1955, the cemetery records have Violet Ada died 9 May 1955! There is a Violet (Violet Magdalene) Savage died 22 January 1947 in Karori Cemetery, but she is described as a spinster aged 85y. NB: Hamilton East, Waikumete and Karori Cemeteries as indicated by the NZSG Burial Locator CD. NB: my email yesterday did not have the correct title. Will send photo of obit when downloaded.
