I made an error. Richard BECK junior went to Victoria in 1855 not 1859. Peter -----Original Message----- From: Peter Dillon Sent: Thursday, February 9, 2017 10:55 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [nz] Ann BECK ( =John WAKELIN ) This isn’t a query, more an FYI for those trying to find Ann BECK’s origins in England. However if someone has noticed her baptism or her parents’ marriage I’ll be more than happy. She and her husband John WAKELIN emigrated to NZ arriving 31 Mar 1851 on the ship TRAVANCORE at Lyttelton where they settled. The problem for researchers is that Ann’s baptism doesn’t seem to be locatable online, nor does a bang-on marriage turn up, and so in trying to determine where she was born researchers have come up with a variety of places. I don’t think any of the ones I’ve seen given are right. Warwickshire, Sutton Coldfield, Aston (by Birmingham) and other places have been suggested. Leicestershire has been given because Ann’s death registration says she was born in Leicestershire. I’m confident that I have her correct birthplace as Market Bosworth in Leicestershire. Her english marriage and NZ death registrations have her father as Richard BECK, a bricklayer. Ann’s eldest child, Mary Ann WAKELIN, married William Washington WEBB. Mary Ann’s obituary says she was born at Bosworth, Leicestershire in 1844. That doesn’t imply that her mother Ann BECK was born there though because Ann’s children were born in a variety of places. But Bosworth is in Leicestershire and is therefore worth a good look. https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19180531.2.4?query="ann wakelin" Press, Volume LIV, Issue 16226, 31 May 1918, p.2 Mrs Mary Ann Webb, who died at 67 Slater street, Richmond, last week, was the eldest daughter of the late John and Ann Wakelin, of Lyttelton. She was born at Bosworth, Leicestershire, on June 24th, 1844, and came to New Zealand with her parents in the ship Travancore, arriving in Lyttelton on March 31st, 1851. She had resided in Canterbury ever since, with the exception of one year spent in Australia. Mrs Webb went in a bullock dray to the first races held at Riccarton. She was married on January 4th, 1866 to Mr W. W. Webb, of Lyttelton and leaves a family of four sons, three daughters, and twelve grandchildren. Consideration of the above would probably have led researchers in the right direction. Maybe they looked hard for Ann in sources but missed Mary Ann’s obit. The next big clue arises from a consideration of what happened to Ann BECK’s daughter, Frances WAKELIN, whose name was on the passenger list to go to NZ but was apparently struck through. I can find no sign of her in NZ. TRAVANCORE, ship, 562 tons, sailed 6 Dec 1850 Gravesend, arrived 31 Mar 1851 Lyttelton with 149 settlers. John WAKELIN 30 Labourer Annie WAKELIN 30 Mary WAKELIN 06 Frances WAKELIN 04 (name crossed out) Thomas WAKELIN 02 Online researchers have Frances born 1846 and died 1850 but without sources. I think that those dates are an educated guess from the fact of Frances being 4 when her name was crossed out. The voyage began in 1850. In fact Ann BECK had two children called Frances, one baptised in 1845 at Castle Bromwich in Warwickshire along with a brother William, and a second Frances baptised in 1846 also at Castle Bromwich. The first Frances must have died very young and an easy to draw implication from the name being crossed off the passenger list is that the second one may have died young as well. I can’t find a death or burial for either Frances. I’ve had experience of people on passenger lists to NZ not actually making it, and there is the possibility that the second Francis took ill and couldn’t travel. So, to dot the i’s and cross the t’s, I had a look for Frances in census enumerations. Lo and behold, this entry surfaced straightaway. 30 Mar 1851 Census of England & Wales @ Village, Peckleton, Leicestershire John FLORENDINE Head Marr 31 Farm Labourer b. Richard died 1858 and Mary 1877. Fanny WAKELIN (Frances) was visiting John & Mary FLORENDINE at Peckleton in 1871, as Fanny DUVAL and with two children in tow. She married Thomas DUVAL in 1868 and they lived at Leicester the city. >From census information, Richard & Mary had a daughter Elizabeth BECK born about 1825 at Market Bosworth who married William JACQUES and lived at Walsall in Warwickshire. It gets even better. Richard & Mary had a son Richard who went to Victoria in 1859, married Sarah TAYLOR at Castlemaine in 1862, had issue in Victoria, then travelled to New Zealand where they had further issue, settling at Kanieri in Westland. He was a butcher. The 1862 marriage registration gives him born Leicestershire with his parents being Richard BECK, dead (correct), and Mary BARRS. Census info for Mary has her born at Peckleton about 1797, so this should be her...
