    3. Depends on your point of view, then versus now. Southland province didn't exist in the early days. I don't know the period when John & co went south having arrived at Lyttelton on 31 Mar 1851, but Southland was first proclaimed a province in 1861 then rejoined Otago in 1870. So if the BECKs went to Otago in the 1850s then it is correct to say that they went to Winton in Otago. I've got an ancestor who left County Down for New Zealand and was in NZ by at least 1871. Some people put him down in their records as being born in Northern Ireland but I always put him as being born in Ireland...because he was. Northern Ireland didn't even exist in the 1800s.
