Further to the Intentions to Marry notices , they are held in Archives NZ in Wellington for 1856 to 1956 (and a few 1855 notices for Auckland and Otago), though fairly recently access has been restricted to those 80y or more old, with no access to those “non-historic” ie from 1937. As stated the “Length of Residence” referred to the time in the district, not in NZ. Often parties from another district would say “3 days” in district, perhaps a minimum? Age and occupation of the parties was given; sometimes just “of full age” and the bride may not have an occupation. The place of marriage was given, often (19c) a house, and if a minor the name of the parent giving consent though sometimes “no-one in colony to give consent”. Later (20c) the date of becoming a widow/widower/divorcee was often given. There are a few local copies of ITMs held in Archives Wellington and probably also in Auckland, Christchurch & Dunedin. Wellington has a card index of ITMs to 1881, including some where the marriage did not eventuate. For searching post-1881 volumes look for the old marriage folio number rather than the names; see my article in the New Zealand Genealogist of October 2014. Hello listers, I've followed this discussion with some interest and wondering if anyone could do a look up for me please. My great great granparents Adam Moore b 1818 Ireland and his wife Charlotte Richardson c 1820 Ireland married at St Matthew's Anglican Church Auckland on 8th Sept 1864. I have a copy of their wedding certificate. I've posted about them before as they departed Tasmania and Victoria for NZ after late 1851. They lived together for about 20 years before marrying. Perhaps the ITM will give me a more definite view of when they arrived in NZ.. I suspect it was circa 1853. Would appreciate any assistance please.
