The query about a n ancestor possibly serving at the Battle of Waterloo reminded of one of several things I was told by my grandmother (born in Armagh of Scottish heritage) when I was 6. Her words have remained in my head to this day: she died in 1947. She said: A member of our family carried Sir John Moore from the battlefield at Corunna. Of course I knew nothing of history back then, but the words have remained embedded in my memory. Any clues about where to next? And if that wasn't enough, I was also told: Members of our family were followers of William Wallace. How's that as a way to induct a child into the mysteries of family history? Paddy Hobart Tasmania
