It is immensely valuable to put your tree on line - none of us have all the facts, and by exposing one's work to review you learn more. Yet there are perennial complaints of "Lazy genealogists" who cut and paste work without attribution or checking, and there are many on line trees whose information is faulty and has long since been superseded by corrections. For this reason FamNet (www.famnet.org.nz) was designed from the beginning to make copying difficult (there is no Gedcom download), but to make linking easy. Suppose that you find that in my tree there is a line of ancestry that is related to you: instead of making a copy of it you link to my records. You get the benefit of an enlarged tree (and, let's face it, who among us doesn't want to have as large a tree as possible), yet the records remain mine and will be instantly updated if I ever update them. FamNet contains just over 15M records: within this there are about 1000 of my records but I could claim to have "a database of more 400,000 records". My grandmother's record (Hannah OLD) is linked to Mirk Smith's records of her OLD ancestry, these in turn link to Tony Cairns' Doole records, and so on. Each record has clear ownership, and a focus for queries. I'd hoped that this idea would get more support, but few people seem to have taken advantage of this facility.
