Historic little building must be demolished. it stood peacefully in the centre of grassy lawns and shady English trees, The Avon river, remaining headstones Barbadoes St Cemetery, the oldest in Canterbury. Built in 1863 the simple wooden building has good lines and the interior was unexpectedly striking. Stained glass windows dated 1864, wonder what happened to them, when this lovely chapel was demolished? Adds made in England. The Centre window is dedicated to the memory of Bishop Henry Harper, the first Anglican bishop of the infant colony, who consecrated the 22 acres of ground set aside for the first cemetery, I know that Henry Tancred is buried in this cemetery, brother to Sir Thomas Tancred, latter buried at Old Napier Cemetery. Its quite a long article but so interesting to read.. perhaps Beverley would welcome this for her collection? It has a photograph of the said chapel. Her name was Sister Vincent Bowler. She was born Margaret Bowler in Co. Kerry in Ireland in November 1861. Her parents were Patrick Bowler, a farmer, and Deborah Brosnohan. At some stage she migrated with her parents to New Zealand. For some reason she moved to Tasmania and entered the Sisters of St Joseph at Westbury on 25 May, 1888; she was 27. I found a quite graphic description of her religious profession in The New Zealand Tablet (18 July 1890, page 3). She was the first Josephite nun to be professed in Tasmania and taught in a small school in the small isolated Midlands town. She received high commendation from the school inspector when he visited. She died on 9 December 1919; she was buried at Tunnack in St Brigid's Cemetery. Can our Rootsweb sleuths discover more about her before she left for Australia or other members of her family? But some deaths in Public and particularly Mental Hospitals may result in an inquest. Deaths at Porirua and Avondale Mental Hospitals (and others?) resulted in regular batches of inquests every month or less in the early 20th century, even if the death was expected eg "senile decay", hence can be found in the index books for inquests at Archives NZ, Wellington. Records of all inquests are held there; some names can be found indexed in Archway, though I would not like to say how many years are indexed. I do not know of a hospital graveyard at Porirua Hospital, and think that burials would be in a public or perhaps church graveyard. But burial records (BR in the NZSG index) may be missing for burials a hundred years ago, and only a stone gravestone would survive until the 1980s when various NZSG branches did transcriptions of them (MI or Monumental Inscriptions in the NZSG indexes). Hence finding records of any burials a hundred years or more is less likely, though certainly possible for some.
