Wendy and I (Admins of the New Zealand dual geographic DNA Project), have just sent out to our members an Autosomal matrix based on a) NZ Port of ancestors' arrival, and b) NZ Island of ancestors' arrival, and c) added in those who simply do not know where their ancestor first landed or settled in NZ. In time, this is going to turn out to be a valuable resource, whether for autosomal testing (that is, chromosomes through 1-22) or Y-DNA or mitochondrial DNA or for purely genealogical reasons. Simply because New Zealand is a real "melting pot" of persons from around the globe AND because so many did NOT move from their area of settlement once they arrived. We know that many on this list have tested their DNA whether via FTDNA or 23andMe, but we also know that many have not bothered joining this project. Then again, we also know that many are interested but simply do not quite know where to begin. Both Wendy and I have worked tirelessly to locate not only our own relatives but those from amongst our genealogical circles and so we do understand that personal contact can be very important. (Wendy is at the top of the mainland and I am a little south of Pukekohe and between us, we try hard to ensure people know what they want to achieve before embarking on such a new adventure). As a result of our findings in what we have put together in the last two or three weeks, given that NZ covers such a small geographical area, I am surprised at the numbers who not only arrived in a particular area, but married there and remained there. Although such a matrix is limited to only those who have tested Family Finder (or have transferred in from say, 23andMe), in time, I expect to extend it out to others. If you have tested your DNA already, to join us, merely go to http://www.familytreedna.com/public/New_Zealand/ Please read the "blurb" and if it interests you, click on <Join Request> in the blue toolbar. And select Option B (if you have NOT tested) and Option A if you have already tested. Kind regards Gail Riddell
