This happened with my father too - he was born in Kaitaia and had never been further south than Gisborne when he enlisted, but as it was 1917 and reinforcements were wanted, he was attached to the Canterbury Regiment!! Oddly though, his brother, who joined up right at the beginning of the war, was also in the Canterbury Regiment - I've got no explanation for that, although he was working in Taranaki when he enlisted, which is a little further south than Kaitaia!
