    3. BYTHELL Obituary 1894 Marlborough Express, Volume XXX, Issue 249, 24 October 1894, Page 2 OBITUARY. ELIJAH BYTHELL. It is with sincere regret that we chronicle thedeath. of Mr E. Bythell, which occurred at his residence in Maxwell Road last night, at a few minutes after 10 o'clock. Mr Bythell had been intimately connected with local surroundings for a number of years, and, though the end was not altogether unexpected, the departure of one so widely known and respected throughout the district will be regarded as a matter of general and deep concern. The deceased gentleman had been in bad health for come two years, aneurism, the primary cause of suffering,, being followed by a complication of diseases. A trip to the Hot Springs of the North Island was taken a few months ago in the hope of restoration, but, it will be remembered, our worthy fellow citizen returned with unimproved health and with but a poor prospect of final recovery; and latterly an almost continuous confinement to the house was necessitated. Deceased had attained the age of 63 years ; he came from near Manchester, England and he arrived in Blenheim at the beginning of 1864, accompanied by Mr James Tait. These two came to Blenheim with the intention of buying out the bakery business carried on at the time by Mr G. Tait, in premises on the site now occupied by the rear of the Criterion Hotel Prior to this, it may be said, Mr Bythell had worked for some time on the Victorian goldfields. The purchase of the bakery business was effected, and a kind of partnership carried on for a short period. Mr Bythell worked for some years at his trade as a carpenter and joiner, for Mr Caleb Davies, and then set up his own establishment, which he has kept going ever since, enlarging his operations from time to time. In municipal matters the deceased always took a prominent part. He was a member of the Borough Council for some years immediately after the institution of the Borough m 1869, and in the "eighties " he occupied a similar position. For the years 1892 93 he filled the Mayoral office. He was also a member of the Lower Wairau River Board for some years. Mr Bythell also played an important part in the history of the local Fire Brigade, and with that body his name must ever be honourably associated. He was an energetic member of the Brigade for some time, and finally occupied the captaincy a few years ago, prior to Mr McArtney's tenure of office; while he held the position of Fire Inspector at the time of his death. In volunteer matters also Mr Bythell took a creditable interest, being a member of the local corps in the early times, and an ex-Ranger of the Marlborough district. He belonged to the Masonic fraternity, being a member of the Marlborough Lodge of Unanimity. During his thirty years' residence in the place Mr Bythell has, been universally regarded as an honourable man and a useful citizen, and his demise will concern a very large circle of friends. He was kind hearted and benevolent to a great degree; many acts are told of him in which his readiness to relieve the distressed and give a helping hand to his fellow creatures speak volumes for his good qualities; and the fact that this charity was unostentatious is still another tribute to his memory. The deceased gentleman leaves a widow and four young children, and we are sure that to our individual sympathy for them will be joined that of the general community, The funeral takes place to morrow.
