Hello Pam A religious name is not the same as a legal name. Sister Mary Magdalene would have been known to the people of Wellington by her religious name but her death will be recorded in official records by her legal name of Hannah Mary MANEY. Papers Past shows that she was buried on 5 January 1896 at Karori Cemetery, Wellington. Her death notice and funeral notice both appear in the Evening Post on 4 January 1896 and there is an obituary for her in the Evening Post of 7 January 1896. If you can't find her death on the BDM website or the Karori Cemetery website then it is probably because of a mistranscription of her surname. The people in the Karori Cemetery office are very helpful and if you contact them with the name, date and details then I'm sure they will be able to provide you with whatever details they have. Her death notice says she died at St Mary's Convent, Hill St, Thorndon. As it happens, I attended St Mary's College, Hill St, for a couple of years. The nuns at that College were members of the Order of Sisters of Mercy. I'm away from home at present but I have a book on that parish and will look to see if Sister MM is mentioned. Also there is a large burial plot for the Sisters of Mercy in the same row as my grandparents' grave at Karori Cemetery. There are a lot of headstones on that plot, but I don't recall seeing any as old as 1896. I'm not certain but I seem to recall that many of the individual sister's plots have been reused over the years. Again the Karori Cemetery office will be able to give you the details of the usage/ reusage of individual plots within the larger Sisters of Mercy 'plot'. Next time I'm at Karori Cemetery - I'll have a look for the grave - but as I say, I suspect that it will have been reused for the burial of another nun.
