    3. these pages explain things about findability of web pages https://www.hawaii.edu/infobits/w2001/websearch.html http://www.ask.com/question/how-do-you-make-your-website-findable -----Original Message----- From: Peter Dillon Sent: Wednesday, April 09, 2014 8:27 AM To: Rootsweb NZ Rootsweb Subject: Re: [nz] Family Tree Website Hosting - please share You need to know some HTML to be able make your web pages more findable, eg you can imbed keywords in a particular part of the HTML code (they don't show on the page) that search bots look for. That's why when you enter seemingly innocuous terms in a search engine you might come up with disreputable porn sites (are there reputable ones?) which have entered such keywords in the html code to get hits which they wouldn't get if they just used rude or sexy words. You need to give the likes of google's search bots time to find and index your web pages. eg if you've only just uploaded the pages Google will have no idea they are there yet. Once they find them you should find your pages coming up as long as there aren't zillions of similar sites that will come up with similar search terms used by searchers. I've left my information all over the web over many years and it is so frustrating to search for a person on my database looking for fresh information and keep coming up with my own stuff! -----Original Message----- From: Bryan P Sent: Tuesday, April 08, 2014 4:11 PM To: Rootsweb NZ Rootsweb Subject: Re: [nz] Family Tree Website Hosting - please share Thanks everyone for the input. How do you get Google and Bing to know who you are on Rootsweb? Olwyn’s site came up. But others I’ve found don’t register. Wendy, how do you get your site recognised? My present homepages site is in the first 10 results of a search. Try Parrott or Fitzpatrick family. For me people searching names on search engines is the most important aspect of internet genealogy. A couple I tried on Rootsweb didn’t show up in the first 10 pages of results. Unfortunately I cannot afford the luxury of a paid domain and hosting, so I may have to go with Rootsweb.
