I am trying to locate the passenger list and/or surgeons report for the "Winterthur" sailing to Auckland, NZ from London on the 23 May 1865. Is there someone out there who has knowledge of where these records may be. National Archives Wgtn and Auckland do not hold anything and nor does the Auckland Library apart from the passenger's names but no other information. Passengers William Williams, Maria Williams and another William Williams sailed on this ship but proof is required before I can claim them as my ancestors eg where they were born, ages, occupations. Thank you. From Margaret Margaret Armstrong margaret@megadyne.co.nz Ph +64-9-576 3676

AGED RESIDENT'S MEMORIES MRS. M. PILLINGER JACKSON Memories of the time when an important part of Auckland's present-day business area was but a tidal swamp and when a journey made with a bullock waggon from Onehunga to Queen Street represented a trek of several days are retained by Mrs. Margaret Pillinger Jackson, of 61 Balmoral Road, Mount Eden. Mrs. Jackson, who is in her 90th year, has been a resident of Auckland for more than 70 years. The second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. Williams, Mrs. Jackson was born in Liverpool on November 23, 1848, and came to New Zealand when she was 16 years of age. Her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. D. Patterson, were emigrating to New Zealand and she decided to accompany them, more with the idea of making a holiday trip than with settling here. They were among the 126 passengers carried in the barque Winterthur. Miss Williams was married shortly before her 18th birthday to Captain Benjamin Pillinger, who was lost at sea in March, 1884. At the time of his death, Captain Pillinger was master of the islands trading schooner Louie. Twelve years later, Mrs. Pillinger married Mr. Arthur Strother Jackson, who died in 1910. Apart from residence for short periods at Thames and at Aratapu, in the Northern Wairoa district, and from a trip made in England in 1902, at the time of the coronation of King Edward VII., Mrs. Jackson has lived in Auckland ever since she came to New Zealand. Three of Mrs. Jackson's seven children are still living. There are 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Although age has dimmed her memory to some extent of happenings years ago, Mrs. Jackson is remarkably alert and takes a keen interest in current affairs. http://www.akcity.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/passengers/passenger.html Name PATTERSON, Anne Vessel WINTERTHUR: May 23 1865 Name PATTERSON, David Vessel WINTERTHUR: May 23 1865 Name WILLIAMS, Frank Vessel WINTERTHUR: Oct 19 1866 Name WILLIAMS, Maria Vessel WINTERTHUR: May 23 1865 Name WILLIAMS, William Vessel WINTERTHUR: May 23 1865 Name WILLIAMS, William Vessel WINTERTHUR: May 23 1865 Log of Logs Vol 1 WINTERTHUR, ship, 688t, of London. The ship had a rough experience in the Channel, and did not clear Start Point until the 9th February. She crossed the line on the 18th March. Port was reached on May 23rd. In 1866, the Winterthur came out with Captain Hunt in command. She left Gravesend on the 24th June, and reached Auckland on the 19th October, after a pleasant and uneventful passage.
