I Chris. There is a John Edwards born 9 September 1921 who died 29 March 1998. There was no Thomas Henry Edwards who died in 1998 in New Zealand according to the NZBDM Online. Unfortunately it doesn't tell us where he died!! On BDMNZ site, John Edwards who died 29 Mar 1998 was buried in Nth Shore Memorial Park.I haven't located an Edwards death 1998 in Gisborne cemeteries with an age that approximates with 1918-1924 birth year. I don't know where John Edwards died! It is a bit like a needle in a haystack... the only other contextual information I have is that this Edwards man who d 1998... father was William Edwards from Gisborne, who left his family and later went to Sydney,Australia circa 1928 , making a new life there with one of my relatives from Gisborne. She died in Sydney in 1947 (b1891). I've searched the ERs 1981 for Gisborne and then compared them with all the deaths in 1998 for Edwards and can't "find a hit". Am beginning to wonder whether the first names have been altered, or switched around.
