If anyone is planning a trip to National archives sometime soon and can view a report on microfilm for me and photograh I would be most grateful. Cheers Cynthia

Just quickly looking at this Wendy, I can't see where you can view these online and they are held in Utah to view in person unless you get these sent to NZ and view at your nearest viewing source. Familysearch can be a bit unwieldy at times, so I thought I would have a quick look to see how to find said Coroners reports It took a little finding at first but it was easy enough in the end Go to familysearch Select Search then "Catalog" Enter New Zealand, select it and search Select Keyword on the left, enter Coroner and search You get three hits which when expanded get :- New Zealand - Court records ( 1 ) Coroners inquest reports, 1888-1938 Author: New Zealand. Department of Justice Add New Zealand - Vital records ( 2 ) Coroners inquest reports, 1888-1938 Author: New Zealand. Department of Justice Add Coroners' inquests, 1888-1926 Author: New Zealand. National Archives Add New Zealand - Vital records - Indexes ( 1 ) Index to coroners' inquests, 1888-1905 Author: New Zealand. National Archives The Coroners inquest reports, 1888-1938 are viewable online (after signing in) But the others are restricted, ie they can only be viewed at an LDS FHS or an affiliate library Coroners' inquests, 1888-1926 Index to coroners' inquests, 1888-1905 Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 19/09/2018 09:29, Ken Woodgate wrote: > The films are available to view 'online' at Familysearch - the records are > not yet indexed however if you have the year and record number they can be > viewed reasonably easily. > > > Ken
Thanks Nivard for your instructions and to Ken for pointing me in the right direction as I did have the year and number of the reports I wanted. I had looked for these once before on Family Search but gave up. Following your instructions I located coroners reports for my paternal grandfather (1914) and my uncle (1924). Even with the year and number for the reports it still a took a wee bit of time to find the actual reports. Now have digital copies. I knew that the reports were being digitised but I didn't know that it had been done so thank you for drawing my attention to this. I had a few inquests that I was keen to view. A little tip. Go to Archway first and find the record there that you are after. Click on "Order Details" to get more information about the record and then take a note of the year and sequential record number. This will make it easier for you to find the record that you are looking for. Thank you for the advice. Sure beats $50 copying fee! Cheers Cynthia
Thank you everyone who stepped in with information in my absence. I'd forgotten how hard it had been to find a specific file, otherwise would have said more in my original reply, sorry. I've really only visited those records once, when I was telling my local group about it; I've not tried to find any particular records for my own purposes yet (so much to do, so little time!). BTW, I knew about these records from reading the magazine of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists, "The New Zealand Genealogist", where it was mentioned earlier this year. I looked at the file last night for my great grandfather Henry David Evans' drowning at Greymouth in 1922 (described nationally as the Blaketown Beach Tragedy) and I learnt something new not recorded in newspaper accounts: he was, as family lore has always asserted, trying to save a young woman (his children's teacher) when he got into difficulties himself. His brother-in-law was with him and tried to save him and nearly drowned himself. The witness statements from his brother-in-law and brother (who identified his body washed up a week later) were brief and unemotive - which nevertheless underlined the enormity this tragic event. My grandmother, then six, mother and her family were all witnesses on the beach that day. If you go looking for a family report try not to look at others as the stories will make you weep. Cynthia
That's so sad Cynthia. Thank you for explaining about the newspaper reports v coronial reports. There's a very interesting (though also sad) book of early Auckland coroners' reports in which I found the death of my great great grand father 1848 and also that of his nephew 1858. Entries from 1841 to 1864. The book is TOUCHING ON DEATHS. A medical history of early Auckland based on the first 384 inquests. By Laurie Gluckman. I'm trying to find a coroner's report for the death of my GGfather Edward Jones in Auckland in 1872. Some years ago I had a transcript of the report but somehow I now only have the first page. How can I get back to the report on line? Have tried Archway and Ministry of Justice (Justice Dept) without getting anywhere. I do have a copy of the NZ Herald report but the coroner's was much more detailed. Can someone point me in the right direction please? Hi Graham, I think your inquest might be too early to be included in the Family Search records, but here's how I would go about it if it is there... First, go to Archway (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__archway.archives.govt.nz_&d=DwIBaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=-mWZZZeVf-T2XFKEtPE1g25Egq_c7AQAHDafyY9XXQQ&m=Rm6pGAAW-t7AinffaqoYMor3Jx9ByO0nvyuknBmDa5A&s=trtBJ5yisikBiZGv_7o8JZRkQDL3V_A2Ht7Ic-wwZ24&e=) and search for your man's file. A search on 'edward jones' brings up over 700 records, but perseverance will get you there. I changed the display to show 100 records at a time, and then used the browser's Find function (Ctrl-F) to look for 'coro' (so it would find coroner, coronial, and any other variations) to check each page. I found your man on the third page. Click on the Order Details link for his record, and you'll see the references associated with that file. The Record No. is probably the one you need here. (If nothing else, you can go to Archives NZ and get a copy of this file using this reference.) Now go to the Coroner's files at Family Search - https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.familysearch.org_search_catalog_544929-3Favailability-3DFamily-2520History-2520Library&d=DwIBaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=-mWZZZeVf-T2XFKEtPE1g25Egq_c7AQAHDafyY9XXQQ&m=Rm6pGAAW-t7AinffaqoYMor3Jx9ByO0nvyuknBmDa5A&s=vVlnLOOXV8t7Tv-yEqRwHQC4TKHmrORjewJGl_cjRyo&e= - and scroll down to where the Film/Digital Notes are listed. Look for the one that matches your file (ie the year and reference number), and click on the camera icon next to that. Now you're looking at the images of that file. They're sorted by reference number, so you'll need to work through the pages to find your reference. Some files are only a few pages, others are much longer, and if I remember correctly from when I was showing this to my local group, the reference number is only on the first page. It will take a little time and patience to find the one you want. Sorry I can't take the time to actually locate your file as I write this today, Graham. I've got my local group meeting today and it's time I was getting myself ready to walk out the door. Hope this helps. :-) Wendy On Sun, Sep 23, 2018 at 5:53 PM Graham L Jones <gee.jay@xtra.co.nz> wrote: > I'm trying to find a coroner's report for the death of my GGfather > Edward Jones in Auckland in 1872. > Some years ago I had a transcript of the report but somehow I now only > have the first page. > > How can I get back to the report on line? > Have tried Archway and Ministry of Justice (Justice Dept) without > getting anywhere. > I do have a copy of the NZ Herald report but the coroner's was much more > detailed. > > Can someone point me in the right direction please? > > Graham >
Thank you Wendy Howard for your detailed explanation. Very useful for so many of us I'm sure. Thank you all for the excellent replies. Wendy is right, the date is too early to be on Family Search. Which leaves me to apply to Archives for a copy. Trouble is the minimum charge appears to be $50. I don't want to have to pay that much, so will tear the house apart to find the copy I already have - somewhere in the clutter. The method for searching will be helpful if I eventually have to cave in. Of course if there is anybody willing to go to Archives and photocopy the report for me, please email me privately and I will send details.
