Chris, Archway has a Coroner's Inquest in 1970 for Grant John Angus DARE. This file is held in Wellington. https://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=24298481 Archway says "Coroner's files are restricted for 50 years from year of registration on the grounds of personal privacy. (For example a file registered in 1940 becomes open in 1991)" For access to Coroner's records which are less than 50 years old, you need to seek the prior approval of Coronial Services of NZ - details of how to do this are included in the above Archway entry. Even if Coronial Services declines your request for early access to the full file, they may still be prepared to give you the date of the accident which will make it much easier for someone to track down a newspaper report for you. Might be worth a try. Otherwise, I suggest you try working backwards through the newspapers from the date of death and see what's in the week or so immediately preceding that date. And in those days most newspapers around the country used to carry reports of most if not all serious accidents/ fatalities in other parts of the country. Out-of-area newspapers may not carry the same level of detail of the accident as the 'local' paper might print - but this is another way of sussing out the date of the accident and then tracking down the more detailed reports in the relevant local paper.
