John, b1867 was one of 5 children under 10 orphaned in 1875. Four children stayed in W'ton and brought up by other people, some under other names. John was sent to Bombay, Franklin, as an 8 yr old, to whom? Family story I have.. "It was to a family called Lucas". [Mathias Lucas of Puni?] He is in Bombay school records as John Hawkins in 1879. John left Bombay c1888 "in search of his sister," found her in Featherston c1889. She was Elizabeth b1868. In 1903 John married Harriet Turnpenny, then moved to Martin, 1911. A son Edgar [12] was sent to Waiuku to live in 1913 and family followed in 1917. John returned to Bombay, Lot 220, in 1919 to farm as did my grparents, Ernest and Elizabeth (nee Hawkins) Cox till c1928. Anyone with a "family story" of an orphan, John Hawkins living with them in Bombay as a child? Any help appreciated, Noeleen.
