    3. Hi Vi Unfortunately the problem you have is partly of your own making ;-) In the latest software we have for the lists there were some changes, admins used to be able to set the size of the digest before it was sent *or* periodically, we no longer have that periodic setting, so all that can be done is to set a size at which time the digest is triggered for sending, set it to small and you get one message per digest, set it to high and you may never get a digest for months on some lists The footer message in the new set up, due to data protection and legislation is larger than previously So when a digest user replies to the list its imperative that they delete all parts of the post that are not relevant to their post, *particularly* the footer message which is appended to *every* message automatically (so there is never a need to copy it back to the list) Your post was 28.8kb in size, largely due to your copying the whole digest and more back to the list, your post included the footer messages eight times (plus the automatic append equals nine) Personally I cannot understand why there is a digest option these days with the volume of posts and speed of most peoples internet But if digest users delete all the irrelevant parts from their replies they should at least get useful posts in a digest rather than repeats of repeats Changing the subject line to the post being replied to also helps to keep the thread together Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 06/08/2018 03:14, Vi wrote: > What has changed that we now get many digest emails per day? 3. I agree with Julie Collins. Keep the regular postings of the Digests to a manageable size by editing (deleting) out all the extraneous stuff on the emails when responding. It is this which clogs up our emails. 3. I’m guessing the size of the digest because people don;t know how to edit out the extraneous stuff. Given your two line email has 8 lines of header and space, (as will mine), not using the “highlight” function to include “only” the email you want to reply to, makes everything messy… On 6/08/2018, at 2:14 PM, [email protected] wrote: Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2018 14:14:34 +1200 From: "Vi" <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>> Subject: [nz]Re: NEW-ZEALAND Digest, Vol 13, Issue 200 To: <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>> Message-ID: <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" What has changed that we now get many digest emails per day? There were about 7-8 Davids but no one with death date of 1st > May 2006. > > Chris > in Melbourne Hi Heather et al I am presuming that the person who transcribed the funeral sheet got distracted and didn’t record all of the details. I decided to put my thinking cap on and see what I could find. I found and had a close look at the 2002 deaths Southland Times list that Chris alluded to. As Chris said, there no David listed with death date of 1st May 2006. >>> David/Dave ? 21 March 1929 - 1 May 2006 (death date) Ah, David was aged 77 when he died. That might help. I then looked for any death notice for a David aged 77 in the right time period. I didn’t see any - but there were several David death notices around that time period with age not given. To cut a long story short, this looked a possibility Name : CLARK David Stanley aka Shorty Age : 00 Date in Southland Times : 03.05.2006 <<< fits death 01.05.2006 Date of Death : 00.00.2006 Place of Death : Not Recorded Place of Burial or if Cremated : Service in Invercargill As he was born more than 80 years ago, I looked for him on the BDM Historical Records site and found : 2006/10282 CLARK David Stanley [born] 21 March 1929 BINGO ! The right birth date ! But when did he actually die ? A bit more finger tapping on the BDM site revealed that David Stanley CLARK died on 1/5/2006 !! With that birth and death date correspondence I’m certain that I have found the right chap, but just to be sure, I will email J Fraser & Sons and ask them to confirm that they did his funeral service. I’ll ask them to cc you. 3. Hello Avis Many thanks for your offer, though not quite as simple as it sounds, help is needed. I am one of the volunteers that are typing Funeral Service Sheets into a database for NZSG. Have one here that has no surname - details are. David/Dave ? 21 March 1929 - 1 May 2006 (death date) Officiating: Lynley McKerrow Funeral Directors J Fraser and Sons Doesn't give date of service If I contact J Fraser they will probably quote the privacy law to me, which happened the last time I tried a different Company. Can you please try and find a Surname for me, as I don't want to put him in as just David. Are you actually able to look through the actual papers? Kind regards Heather -----Original Message----- From: Avis McDonald Sent: Sunday, August 05, 2018 5:45 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [nz]Re: Southland Times Death Notice 2006 Hi Heather I can do this for you tomorrow if you send me the details Regards Avis McDonald -----Original Message----- From: Heather McLean Sent: Sunday, August 05, 2018 11:45 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [nz]Southland Times Death Notice 2006 Morning List Is there some kind person who can check out a death notice in the Southland Times in 2006 for me please. 3. (unless they’ve gone on-line somewhere that I don’t know about!) 1856 George HILL and Sarah *should be* FLORANCE, but it’s indexed oddly on BDMs. The intention may or may not be spelled correctly to include her in the family as *others* claim! Thanks Jools

    3. Have not heard of that "arrangement."Reminds me of the movie Green Dolphin Street. The book is better. Tuapeka Times 8 April 1896 Page 6 MISSING FRIENDS. 3. I’ve got two ancestors who jumped ship in NZ, one changed his name (but passed on the details to his family of his real identity), and the other never bothered. I can’t believe a governor would involve himself… Was he Royal Admiralty or Merchant Marine? The former might end up with him facing disciplinary action, and being offered an alternative. There is (was) a book on Deserters in NZ waters, (sorry mental blank on it’s proper title) but the records for RA are now online, so if you haven’t yet you should be able to find your man readily enough. I have DNA matches with Short cousins so that part is OK but the next part of the story is that the NZ Governor at the time offered him immunity from prosecution for jumping ship if he joined the Auckland Naval Volunteers - which he did. My question is - has anyone heard of this "arrangement" before? I have heard that "jumping ship" was not unusual and one way of immigrating to New Zealand. I look forward to your comments and assistance. Thank you Angela
