Hi Margaret, I don't know of any libraries outside of the Auckland area that offer that same service of using Ancestry on your own computer via their wi-fi, sorry. It's a great thing that Auckland Libraries offer, and I've made use of it myself when at one of their libraries. In the meantime, did you know that you can get Ancestry to email a document to you from the library subscription? Easier, in my opinion, than transferring to and from a flash drive, which could fail at any time. Next time you're at your local library, check the options offered when you go to save a document, it should be there. Hi, I have been used to to the wonderful service by Aukland Libraries where I could take my laptop into one of their branch libraries, connect to their wifi, access Ancestry and download any files directly to my computer. Having moved, I am very disappointed to find that I can only access Ancestry in the main library and on their computers, which means having to use an unfamiliar computer and try to load the files to a flash drive (which didn’t work!}. If any readers have direct access at their local library could they please let me know off-list so I have ‘ammunition’ to make an appeal to my local library. I just need the names of the libraries. The BDM Historical Records site lists the death date for a Pamela Berry who was born in late 1920 as 18 March 2014 A death notice in the Herald on 19 March 2014 says that a funeral service for a Pamela Berry who died on 18th March aged 93 was to be held at Newberry’s Funeral Home in Whangarei. We do need to prepare for the time when we will not be able to maintain our work. Passing our database to an organization such as National Library is not really the answer, because as we all know software changes over time, and sooner or later our file will be left behind when some better system replaces the format we have used. That is why National Library is unlikely to accept databases. Databases are great while we assemble our information, but we must sooner or later write the story. Many genealogists try to avoid this step, which is absolutely essential if we want our work to survive. It's not the names and dates that are vulnerable, it's the little stories and explanations that go with the names and dates. And all the oral history, and the maps and photographs and other mementoes we have gathered. Aim for quite a simple production - just copy/paste everything you have into one Word file. Include charts to help people follow, even a hand drawn chart that you scan and paste into your file. Photograph or scan all your treasures so their images can be included. Get help from a Genealogy Group if you need it. When finished, save it as a single file in .pdf format, and you will have something that is much more likely to survive. Go to Family Search family tree and "Find" a member of your family. Look for the "Memory" tab near the top of the screen and upload your .pdf attached to the record of that person, where others will find it who happen to also be interested. Family Search accepts quite large files in their Memories section. Because of the underlying philosophy of Family Search I consider that website has a much greater likelihood of surviving than most of the commercial websites. I even think you might find they have a way of accepting transcription files such as Bev produces if they are indexed, but you would need to be clear of copyright issues. Uploading a Gedcom is possible, but not such as good idea because it will probably create duplicates if parts of the family are already in the Tree. Better to check what is already there and add any xtra details you may have, or add new people individually to existing families. If you need help to get started drop in to an LDS Family History Centre.
