Anti-facebook users will just have to get over themselves, really. Facebook have never made a penny out of me, and I’ve been using it for more than ten years. for much much more than genealogy. Thanks from me too, Hugh for the good you’ve done, but this has been a dying duck for years, after it disappeared into the nethers as it did for so long. FaceBook users groups then had the opportunity to replace the lists, in a different format. It’s been a long time since I’ve even read these (decided I better check it, after the sheer number hitting my inbox in the past few days). I also receive, but rarely read, an AZORES Group through Gmail. Not sure how those groups run, but the premise is the same as the rootswebs lists. I’d also like to point out there is Peter Calver’s "Lost Cousins” and NZ’s own “FamNet” that are likely not regularly used by rootsweb list users. In fact the plethora of internet available information is why these lists have turned their toes up. Of recent years they’ve mostly all been about people looking for information they hope other users have easier access to. But nowadays most of *that* information is already in the public domain, i.e. on-line. “time to say good-byyyeeeeeeeee" Julie On 8 Jan 2020, at 1:19 pm, new-zealand-request@rootsweb.com wrote: -----Original Message----- From: Murray Reid [mailto:mhhr@xtra.co.nz <mailto:mhhr@xtra.co.nz>] Sent: Wednesday, January 8, 2020 7:18 AM To: new-zealand@rootsweb.com <mailto:new-zealand@rootsweb.com> Subject: [nz]Re: Fwd: [ROOT-LO-ANNOUN] RootsWeb Mailing Lists Sadly, Adele you are right, but I cannot imagine Facebook ever performing a public good so many of us have enjoyed from Rootsweb lists. Many thanks to Hugh and everyone else who helped over the years. Have had a look at the new site Hugh suggested and will give it a try. Thank you Hugh, I have just joined the new list. The NZ list has been so helpful to me over the last 20 yrs, a shame but they call it 'progress'. I am of the old school. Firstly thank you for all your work over the years Hugh. The list has been a great help to so many. I have just viewed your test and while it is very different, it is not hard to use, and is certainly worth a try. its what you get used to. I searched genealogy and family history, and there is a lot of groups doing various aspects of research. I vote we give it a try. regards, Calvin On 8/01/2020 3:31 pm, hugh wrote: > This is a result of a test done on groups.io in answer to a subscribe > request > > Hugh > > Hello, > > Welcome to the newzealand@groups.io group at Groups.io <http://groups.io/>, > a free, easy-to-use email group service. Thank you Hugh for your work managing this list, and providing calm moderation when occasionally needed. I'm sorry to see this list disappear. We'll welcome any list members who haven't already done so to register on FamNet to get our monthly newsletter, as this remains a source of information on NZ Genealogy. Like Rootsweb it's free, but it is a monthly publication so, while you can post a letter to the editor it will can take up to a month to be published, and we can't provide the ongoing discussion that have been such a useful feature of this list. Hugh, it would be great if you can create a new list on Groups.io. If not, we may be able to provide something from FamNet. Contact me if you want to discuss this. Hugh You've been a terrific admin of this list and it has been the best list of many I belong to. It has been the most active and involves so many people and the beauty is being able to trace back and find past mails and answers. Of course that was better and easier before the change of ownership and the shutdown. I am not familiar with Google groups or Groups I.O. but I would be very keen to see the NZ Genealogy list continue in some format except for Facebook. Regards and many thanks for all you do.
