My offering for today, new group.. today is the anniversary for Ellen Dougherty, First Registered Nurse in the World, thought being a new group mention our Ellen, born in Cloudy Bay. South Island New Zealand, trained at Wellington Hospital. And her name was the first on the page when Registration started in New Zealand. I have seen her Medal No.1 at Nurses Chapel. Wellington Hospital years ago, have a photograph off it.. I am visiting her grave at Clareville Cemetery at 2pm. Today on the Anniversary of Registration of Nursing.. England did not start Registration until 1919 the year Ellen Died, She was also Palmerston North First Matron. I attended the Celebration for Centenary of Nursing at Parliament and Wellington Archives back in 2002. Arranged for her grave to be restored. And the Dougherty family had a massive Family get together the other year, I didn't attend, even though was invited, just made myself available for the Cemetery Tour at Clareville for Dougherty. Telford. Hornsby etc. Drummond is also part of the family.. I do have the book on Sarah & Daniel Dougherty and their descendants, which was signed by members of the family after the Blessing of her grave at the Centenary. This book will stay in Carterton, donated to the town when the time is right. Its important history having even family signatures listed.. When I first started researching this Clareville Cemetery 2000 when we found her grave, I had never heard of Ellen. so pleased I started researching this cemetery!!!! Love the project.
