Hi Ainslie You will remember that NZ wasn't a separate country or self-governing entity until some time after 1840 Dates are important-- some considerations - 1) Before 1840 NZ was not independent and was a part of the Colony of NSW 2) NSW was declared a Colony in 1788, with arrival of the First Fleet - the Governor exercised authority over all the territory east of the 135th meridian, which included NZ (- so Wikipedia tells me) 3) From 1803, some settlements were established in Tasmania 4) in 1825 Tasmania (VDL) became a colony separate from NSW 5) In 1839 Britain included NZ in the Colony of NSW, and NSW laws operated in NZ from June 1840 6) In 1841 NZ became a Colony separate from NSW SO - I agree with Bob - an important first question is - When did he die? AND - I agree with Christine - a second question would be where was his property situated? Good luck Regards Stephen NZ //// On Friday, September 12, 2014 10:53 PM, Bob Poole via <new-zealand@rootsweb.com> wrote: Hi Christine and Ainslie What date did he die? CrossTasman connections Hi folks, It's been a while since I posted to the NZ genealogy list but I have discovered some online family documents (from the Tasmanian Library) which have intrigued me. Why would my late great grandfather's Will be held in the Tasmanian archives? William and Sarah Stroud migrated to New Zealand and settled in Invercargill in the early 1800s but William's last Will and Testament is showing up in the Hobart Museum archives. Was this because it was simpler to have archival material from the bottom of NZ sent to Tasmania than have them sent to Wellington (NZ) ? I live in Adelaide (SthAustralia) and have been planning a trip to Tasmania where my father's family settled in the early 1830s so I had already planned a stay in Hobart to check the archives for the Cato and the Brown family.. Now it seems I'll have to extend the period I'll be there to follow up on the Stroud connection as well! Cheers Ainslie -in sunny but chilly - Adelaide. Sth Australia.
Hi Les , Ella Maude Fox seems to have dropped her middle name from the time she came to Christchurch with husband Henry Fox, according to NZ electoral rolls . However the Christchurch Cemeteries database has her recorded as Ella Maude Fox. Many thanks to those who replied. Penne, there were some links in your message, but they didn't work for me. What is that Axbridge link? My anti-virus didn't like that one. I would like to follow that one up. Tried to reply to you, but my note was rejected as spam. Les

Hi all. Am looking for my grandparents arrival in NZ, about 1905 according to their death printouts. 1st is Henry Fox, formerly of England. It is possible he had a stay in South Africa along the way, purely conjecture on my part. He was in the Boer War as far as I know. He would have been about 27 upon arrival. I found one record of this name and age range departing for SA from England, 1903, but no further details as yet. Secondly, my grandmother, Ella Watts (if she wasn't Mrs Fox by then)., formerly of New Norfolk, Tasmania. She would have been 21 then. There are almost no details available, as Henry disowned his family in England and never spoke of them. I have traced a fair degree of info on my grandmother in Tasmania, but have no details of the whereabouts of the family that stayed behind there. I assume they would have disembarked at Wanganui, as the first details I pick up are from the electoral rolls there. They later moved to ChCh. Finding it difficult to get any info without everyone wanting money first. I don't mind paying for the info, but I want to know if the info is somewhat relevant first. Any guidance welcome... Les

Hi everyone, I had many very helpful responses to my query. Thank you all. Combining your input with what I already knew my conclusions are as below. Samuel Reid Humphries, born on born on 1 June 1903, was the illegitimate son of Samuel Reid and Margaret Humphries, nee Fishwick, and adopted out, officially or unofficially, to Samuel's parents, who were registered as his parents. Samuel and Margaret had four more children. From school records and family information, they lived happily as husband and wife, were known and voted as Mr and Mrs Reid, brought all five up, plus an earlier Humphries daughter of Margaret's, as Reids. Samuel and Margaret married over 20 years later in 1929 to legitimise a daughter before her marriage, and registered or reregistered the younger four on the same day. One remaining "mystery" is why they did not register/reregister their eldest son at the same time. Perhaps because he had been falsely registered as the legitimate son of Samuel's parents? Perhaps because he had not been registered? The first boy for some reason needed to be registered in 1972. As the pension age was then 60, and he was living in NZ, it is a puzzle as to why it was not done when he turned 60 in 1963. There is another mystery as Samuel and Margaret's 1 June 1903 child, registered in 1972 as Samuel Reid Humphries Reid, was known at school, on his marriage certificate, and by the family as Malcolm Mayo Reid .His younger brother, born 20 August 1904, was called Selwyn Samuel Reid. Perhaps it was confusing to have two youngsters less than 15 months different in age, called Samuel and Selwyn Samuel in the one household. Perhaps the grandparents looked after him for some time, but the dramatic change in name puzzles me. Regards, Graham Ogilvie
