Hi List I'm trying to find any details at all with regard to a Mrs W. Thomas (Amy) who was listed as 'sister' on James Bain's NZ Army enlistment papers for WW1. They were living in Matawai, near Gisborne, New Zealand As James & Edward did not have a sister, that we know of, named Amy, I was hoping someone might be able to rummage around for me. BAIN James Thomas Born 17 July 1890 in Longwood, Victoria Australia Father Robert Bain Mother Ellen Theresa Bourke James died of wounds in 1918 and is listed on NZ War Memorial His brother Edward Bain was also in Matawai, near Gisborne, New Zealand I've looked through Papers Past and found articles re James death etc., but it's Mrs W. Thomas (Amy) about whom I need an answer. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers & thanks Marcelle in Western Australia
Many thanks for everyone who sent some very interesting and helpful information, but unfortunately it didn't turn up Emily Driller the baby I am looking for. As some one said, one of those mysteries that never turn up. Thanks you all for your help Pam
Having been recently contacted about old rootsweb enquiries myself, I popped off a note to "Aotueka" Beth about one of her earlier inquiries regarding the above families and Thames. Having done that I thought there may be others on the New Zealand rootsweb list interested in these families. Mary ROGERS [ nee SIMMONS / SYMONS] and her second husband William ARGALL arrived in New Plymouth in 1842 on the Blenheim. With them were the four children from William's first marriage:- William, Richard, Grace & Elizabeth ARGALL and seven children of Mary's first marriage:- Mary LANGMAN, John, Thomas, Eliza, Fanny, Henry and Edward ROGERS. With Mary Langman were her husband Richard and three sons, Richard, John & Thomas. This couple remained in New Plymouth. The rest of the family were in Auckland by Jan 1845, the women and younger children arriving on the Government Brig HMS Victoria While in Auckland, Eliza ROGERS married Henry HURFIT and Fanny ROGERS married William GOLLOP in March 1845, and Henry Rogers died, also March 1845. Thomas ROGERS married Janet BARR in August 1845, and John ROGERS married Jane ROBERTSON in 1849. All of these family members or some of these family members went to work on the copper mine at Kawau Island. HURFIT, GOLLOP and ROGERS children were born there. THE ARGALL marriage disintegrated some where around this time. William senior and son Richard ARGALL were in NSW when Richard died of a shooting accident in 1849. Mary SYMONS / ROGERS / ARGALL died 1860 in Auckland John ROGERS died 1864 in Auckland leaving a large family who were still very young. His wife Jane was daughter of John ROBERTSON of Queensferry Hotel Vulcan Lane. Thomas ROGERS & wife Janet BARR went to California Goldfields, came back established themselves at Otahuhu at Criterion and Commercial hotels, involved in local community & racing industry. Then purchased farm at Papatoetoe. Only one child. Ellen married Richard McGEE Eliza ROGERS & Henry HURFIT - large family- Henry died Thames 1869, family returned to Auckland then moved to Nelson. Fanny ROGERS & William GOLLOP - Fanny died c1847 - had one son William Henry Gollop - appears to have been brought up with HURFITs. William Henry GOLLOP - Billiards player, draper & hotel keeper, in Thames prior to arrival of his father William GOLLOP and second wife Cecelia GEORGE. Younger Gollop went to Nelson, Napier, Sydney then Western Australia Edward ROGERS married Jane MORAN widow of Henry KEVEY in 1863. The couple had two children. Thomas and William ROGERS. Jane had three children in her first marriage. Edward had a daughter in 1959 in NsW with his first wife. Edward and Jane lived in Thames & Otahuhu. The couple separated and Jane remained in Otahuhu. Charles AMYES married Fanny HURFIT daughter of Eliza and Henry. They lived Auckland area, Thames, then Christchurch. Hope this is of interest to some list members Cheers Bobbie

Hi All: For births and deaths at sea, I think that the Captain of British registered ships had a responsibility to register them when he returned to England. What used to be called the "St Catherines Indexes" includes sections for overseasw and maritime (and air?) BDMs. Yours, John Wilson > If some one was born about Jan 1864 coming down the coast of NZ. My advice is that her birth should have been registered at the first port the ship called at, or at the port where the family disembarked. But I wouldn't count on it - I've got someone born at sea in 1841 and as far as I can find out his birth was never registered. Hi John Whilst you are right in theory to a degree, in practice many "overseas" events were not recorded, or were recorded inaccurately There are some indexes available, the GRO indexes (what was many moons ago St Catherines House indexes) have some for overseas & consular events and there are also some Board of Trade indexes Pam If you post the name, ship etc I can check them for you, to see if the event was recorded More on the subject here from the National Archives < http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/bmdatseaorabroad.htm> On first sight the year ranges seem promising, but in actuality they were much less Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 14/09/2014 04:56, John Wilson via wrote: > Hi All: > > For births and deaths at sea, I think that the Captain of British registered > ships had a responsibility to register them when he returned to England. > What used to be called the "St Catherines Indexes" includes sections for > overseasw and maritime (and air?) Thank you both for your generous assistance with my research. It looks as if I need to get stuck into this family research with a vengeance and get my act together to head off down to Hobart for some serious research! My late mother was the youngest of six children of a William Gower (part Tasmanian aboriginal) and Lillian the daughter of Edmund (Ned) Oxenbridge who's extended family had a gold claim on the Shotover River at Queenstown. They'd built a tunnel to divert the water (thus exposing any gold trapped in the river bed) but overnight there was a massive thunderstorm and by morning any gold that was in the riverbed was washed miles further down the river! The only ones to make it rich from the tunnel appears to be the Queenstown authorities who no doubt reap a mint from the tourists who take the jet boat ride down the river and through the Oxenbridge tunnel!!! My paternal grandfather was a newly graduated civil engineer from Hobart who was working in Invercargill at the time of the extension of the railway line through to the bottom of NZ. He returned to Tasmania to marry and then took his bride back to Invercargill. Their next door neighbours were also a newly married couple, James Jesse Stroud and his wife Sarah. They had two small boys, Laurence and Maurice. The Browns had two young children -my aunt and my father. When Jim Brown's contract period was over the Brown family moved back to Tasmania but they all kept in touch with the Stroud family and the children were penfriends for several years. When WW2 was looming my father joined the Aust. Navy. His ship went on a 'goodwill' visit to NZ and he had shore leave to visit the Stroud family. He and Mum became engaged and then when war was declared Mum resigned from her nursing position and set sail for Australia. They married in 1939. I was born in 1943 and my sister in 45. After the war ended we lived in a small seaside area south of Hobart until 1950 when we moved to Nelson to be closer to Mum's family. In 1964 I came over to Adelaide for the Adelaide Festival of Arts but ended up staying and marrying a young bank officer and here I am still!! Cheers Ainslie.

Hi Christine and Ainslie What date did he die? Many Tasmanian wills are online. There is a will in the Hobart Archives for a William STROUD who died in Launceston 15 April 1909. He had daughters, Sarah Emma and Susannah Amelia. Have you checked the one you refer to? There is only one other William STROUD mentioned in the Archives and he was William John Davenport STROUD who died in 1980. http://stors.tas.gov.au/907786 Cheers Bob -----Original Message----- From: new-zealand-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:new-zealand-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Christine Tregonning via Sent: Friday, September 12, 2014 6:38 PM To: woodart@woodart.com.au; New-Zealand@Rootsweb. Subject: [nz] Just curious!! CrossTasman connections Hi folks, It's been a while since I posted to the NZ genealogy list but I have discovered some online family documents (from the Tasmanian Library) which have intrigued me. Why would my late great grandfather's Will be held in the Tasmanian archives? William and Sarah Stroud migrated to New Zealand and settled in Invercargill in the early 1800s but William's last Will and Testament is showing up in the Hobart Museum archives. Was this because it was simpler to have archival material from the bottom of NZ sent to Tasmania than have them sent to Wellington (NZ) ? I live in Adelaide (SthAustralia) and have been planning a trip to Tasmania where my father's family settled in the early 1830s so I had already planned a stay in Hobart to check the archives for the Cato and the Brown family. Now it seems I'll have to extend the period I'll be there to follow up on the Stroud connection as well! Cheers Ainslie -in sunny but chilly - Adelaide. Sth Australia. Ainslie, what date was the will? NZ was administered from NSW in the very early days of settlement. Hi again folks, please excuse my tardy replies to those kind enough to respond to my posting. Life has a habit of getting in the way of things sometimes. I have pasted my previous posting below for reference. >From some of the responses I have been getting, I think I had better add a few details that we already do know. My Fox line seems to be the only one in NZ as best we can tell. I haven't come up with anyone related to us at this stage. Hardly surprising, considering the block we have here. I think that I am the only one researching this here. My grandfather died the year before I was born and spoke nothing of his family basically to anyone. I come up with the odd snippets here and there, but not a lot to help. Both my grandparents according to their death printouts were married in Wanganui. Hers comes out at 1906, his is 1908 when they married. His burial was an Anglican one, my grandmother was a Roman Catholic. My Dad was brought up as one. He was a joiner by trade. His parents were Harry (Army Officer) and Mary and his birthplace was noted as London, England. Dad told me he was born in Cumberland. My Dad passed away several years ago, so I can't ask him anymore - not that he really knew anything anyway. Hope all that helps a bit. Thanks again Les Am looking for my grandparents arrival in NZ, about 1905 according to their death printouts. 1st is Henry Fox, formerly of England. It is possible he had a stay in South Africa along the way, purely conjecture on my part. He was in the Boer War as far as I know. He would have been about 27 upon arrival. I found one record of this name and age range departing for SA from England, 1903, but no further details as yet. Secondly, my grandmother, Ella Watts (if she wasn't Mrs Fox by then)., formerly of New Norfolk, Tasmania. She would have been 21 then. There are almost no details available, as Henry disowned his family in England and never spoke of them. I have traced a fair degree of info on my grandmother in Tasmania, but have no details of the whereabouts of the family that stayed behind there. I assume they would have disembarked at Wanganui, as the first details I pick up are from the electoral rolls there. They later moved to ChCh.
