James William Miller was born in London in 1865 the next child was born in Christchurch in 1867 so James William Miller (why do they name sons the same as the father??)his wife Mary Ann (they married in 1860 in Islington Middlesex) with presumably the one child cant seem to find any others prior to 1865 arrived here in the intervening 2 years = Im blowed if I can find them. Even if they did have other children then they were born 1860-65 and so would be on the shipping list as well. nothing nada zilch!! not sure what Im doing wrong but I cannot find them. Tried the shipping from Vic to NZ nothing there. Does anyone have shipping lists that cover that time frame that are not online or have I missed them somehow. many thanks Patsy

    1. [nz] Reid family of Clareville
    2. Adele Pentony-Graham via
    3. Have often wondered with the Reid family of early Clareville, where did they get the name of the farm.. CALVIN BANK, is it from where they lived perhaps in Glasgow.. I do have the book in front of me, off the Reid family, an account of the early life of our Grandparents Thomas and Mary Ann Reid and the occupation of the Farm at Clareville. 1858-1958. it is so interesting Thomas and Mary Reid came out to NZ in 1840. Thomas married Mary Ann Watson in 1838. I have over the years met many descendants but no one seems to know where the name Calvin Bank came from, I just assume back in their old home in Glasgow perhaps.. they sailed with their daughter in l839 on Bengal Merchant. Sadly the daughter died and was buried at Sea.. Their homes here at Clareville, still stand today, Thomas sadly was the first recorded burial at Clareville Cemetery (then was called Taratahi Cemetery) he died whilst cutting a tree down and it fell on him. I shall be off line from beginning of October until beginning of November. Thank you Adele Clareville Taphophile

    1. [nz] MOSEN
    2. Ravenstone via
    3. Hi List. Thanks to all those persons who offered information to my MOSEN query. There was to many replies to individually thank everyone, as other than the ones online, I received more off line. Graham Hoult hit the nail on the head, and had every i dotted and every t crossed. My main interest is to find out where and when she died. Now I know she went down to the South Island, as she sent a request to my uncle for money to get back to the North Island - this was declined. Now according to the NZ Society of Genealogy Burial Index, there is a Mrs TOWERSEY buried in the Upper Wairua Cemetery. I have been in contact with the sexton of this Cemetery, and this person is not on their records. I then contacted the NZ Society of Genealogy, and this is the answer I got from them - I looked at the Cemetery Book for Upper Wairau, Marlborough 1875-1968 N02.24 and found the entry for Mrs Towersey. Plot 159. There is a note by this name saying it was pencilled in. No reason given. I can only speculate as to who this person, buried at the Upper Wairua Cemetery is, but it is my guess that Dorothy assumed the surname of TOWERSEY. This is the only TOWERSEY world wide that I don't know about, as all the rest of them are related to me. Cheers Ron

    3. On Fri, 26 Sep 2014 Ron, posting as "Ravenstone" <ravenstone@ihug.co.nz>, asked >Subject: [nz] MOSEN > >Hi List, > >Does anyone know any details about Dorothy MOSEN. > >Dorothy lived with James George (Pop) TOWERSEY and his wife Alice on >the main street running through Greytown. > >When Alice died, Dorothy remained in the house, but when James >George died it is believed she went down to the South Island to live. > >I am mainly looking for the details of her death i.e. where and when >did she pass away. > >Cheers > >Ron Hi Ron (and list) I have found information for Dorothy MOSEN *prior* to Alice TOWERSEY's death, but nothing after :-( I note that Heather has found a 2012 death registration index entry for a Dorothy Ann Forey MOSEN, and Sandra has posted information about her death and subsequent cremation in Auckland. With respect, I don't think that the above is the Dorothy MOSEN who Ron is looking for. The one above is listed in electoral rolls as living in the South Auckland area. Ron said that the Dorothy MOSEN he is asking after was living in Greytown. It figured it could be useful to get some idea of dates for the events Ron mentions. > When Alice [TOWERSEY] died, Dorothy [MOSEN] remained in the house ... This is probably Alice's death reg 1956/death_reg# 32014 TOWERSEY Alice [age] 73Y The BDM site records Alice's death date as 10 December 1955. As an aside, I found a 1910 marriage index entry showing Alice's maiden (or former) name as PALMER. Now to the Dorothy MOSEN Ron is asking for ... 1954 Wairarapa General Roll MOSEN Dorothy Gwendoline - Main Rd., Greytown - married also listed TOWERSEY Alice - Greytown - married TOWERSEY James George - Greytown - pensioner For the record, the 1957 roll lists James George TOWERSEY as living on Main St., Greytown. Looking for Dorothy MOSEN further back ... 1935 Masterton General Roll has MOSEN Dorothy Gwendoline - 72 Columba Rd., Masterton - married MOSEN Kenneth Percival - 72 Columba Rd., Masterton - labourer Kenneth Percival MOSEN is also listed in the 1954 Wairarapa roll, but at what looks to be a Masterton address. He is listed at Wairarapa, then at Wanganui, through until 1969, albeit in the last one as Kenneth P. The BDM site lists the death of a Kenneth Percival MOSEN, aged 60, on 18 Nov 1971. I note their 1933 marriage registration index entry 1933/marr_reg# 8242 Dorothy Gwendoline HICKSON & Kenneth Percival MOSEN On the off-chance, I looked for Dorothy MOSEN's death under probable maiden name HICKSON. No luck :-( I also looked for a possible previous marriage. > when James George died ... 1967/death_rg# 28865 TOWERSEY James George [age] 84Y The BDM site records James' death date as 15 August 1967. > ... it is believed she went down to the South Island to live. I can't see an electoral roll entry for Dorothy Gwendoline MOSEN between 1967 and 1981 : in fact, I can't see *any* reference to her after that 1954 entry. Perhaps Dorothy and her husband separated and she remarried? Possibly after her husband's death? I looked on E/Rs for "Dorothy Gwendoline" with no surname. There are quite a few! It would take a while to suss them out. Summing up, I have found records for Dorothy Gwendoline MOSEN up until 1954, a year before Alice TOWERSLEY's death, - but nothing after. Perhaps Dorothy moved away earlier than you indicated? Possibly even before Alice's death at the end of 1955 ? Or perhaps she failed to register, or asked to be unlisted? The only thing I can think of from here is to see if there is any clue in the death notices for Alice and James George TOWERSEY. OR trawl the marriage indexes from 1957 [no remarriage on the NZSG CD] OR ask someone who lived in Greytown at that time and knew Dorothy MOSEN and/or the TOWERSLEYs. Round and round, and back where I started :-( - but hope some of it is useful. Regards Graham Hoult Kirwee, Canterbury

    3. I am also sorry to learn of Graemes passing. He had some of my Alldridge family on his website, however I do agree with Angela I think it was about errors. He has my gt grandfathers brother George ALLDRIDGE as being married twice - I have his death certificate and it says nothing about a wife. He also states the youngest brother Edwin died in 1883 aged 16 - the BDM site has an Edward ALDRIDGE (the other spelling I have to look for) aged 18 yrs (same year though - 1883). Edwin has been bit of a thorn in my side so to speak as I cannot find a death for him BUT I have found newspaper reports of him being in trouble in 1899. Anyway I have never found the link between us and still cannot. RIP Graeme. If you click on any of the headers...i.e..surname, you will see that Dorothy was cremated at North Shore Crematorium on 10th Jan 2012 and ashes returned to the Funeral Director on 12th January 2012. What made me think of North Shore Crematorium was your earlier reference to Upper Wairau Cemetery. In fact North Shore Crematorium and Cemetery is located in the suburb of Albany which is NEXT TO WAIRAU PARK light industrial and residential area IN AUCKLAND ! J Further, if you don't already have this information Dorothy was married to Alistair Charles Tauroa MOSEN They lived in Papakura area of South Auckland until 1978 and then moved to the Bay of Islands where, in the 1981 NZ Census they are recorded as living at Tasman St, Mangonui, NZ.
