    3. Thank you Shirley, Gillian, Christine and Mary for your prompt responses. I now recall reading the N.Z. Gazette, and finding the same information for my grandfather way back in the later 1800s but didn't join the dots for this case. I have forwarded the Archway site and the information there to my cousin and she can decide whether to follow up on that. While writing this Mary's response has come through so I will follow up on that as well. 3. There was one just like this in my house when I moved in. Unfortunately it was missing some parts and didn't work so I had it taken out. My house was built in 1950 so presumably the range dated from then. Jeanette -----Original Message----- From: Olwyn Whitehouse via Sent: Sunday, October 12, 2014 8:23 AM To: new-zealand Subject: [nz] Is this a Shacklock? What is written on the oven door? http://preview.tinyurl.com/qh9cgaw What year is the range? Otago Witness, 1 March 1894, Page 35 Over a score of years have elapsed since Mr H. E. Shacklock commenced the manufacture of ranges and grates which he now carries on in an extensive way, in conjunction with general iron founding, in his premises facing Crawford street. It was in 1872 that Mr Shacklock established himself in business in Dunedin on a site, which forms part of the area of ground at present occupied by his works. His premises now extend right through from Crawford street to Princes street, the latest addition to them being a brick building with a frontage to the latter street, which was formerly used as a grain and wool store, but is now, for the greater part, utilised in connection with his works. ...It is worthy of note that nearly all the machines in this department were made by Mr Shacklock, and were specially designed- to meet the particular requirements of his trade. The stock of all the smaller sizes of ranges is kept in the store room. It may surprise some people to be told that no fewer than 15 different sizes of ranges are made by Mr Shacklock, and kept in stock by him. The largest is a 6ft ranges with a high-pressure boiler and two ovens, each of which is fitted with a pair of folding doors, and the smallest is a 2ft range with a single oven. The latter range, with the next larger size — which is 3ft, with an oven and boiler— is taking the place in the market of the stoves which are imported from America. The smallest range which is supplied with two ovens is a 4ft range — in a smaller one the ovens would necessarily be so diminutive as to be of no great value. Various modifications are made in the goods to meet special circumstances, one that may be noted being the attachment of what Mr Shacklock calls the auxiliary burner, the effect of which is that it is possible to burn a piece of firewood 21in long within a 3ft range. The ranges are finally constructed on four-wheeled trucks, so that they can be readily moved about, and, when they are being sent away for delivery they are lowered from the store room by a self braking lift. The whole of the machinery in the works is driven from a 14-h.p. boiler with a 10in cylinder engine. Mr Shacklock has recently had a chimney built to a height of 75ft, to give an improved draught to the furnace. Between 30 and 40 hands are employed in the foundry, the majority of them having received their training in the works from the proprietor. 3. Hi Listers, I have a birth certificate of a family member who was born in 1959 at St Margaret's Private Hospital, Epsom, Auckland. Also Known as St Margaret's Obstetric Hospital, Epsom, Auckland. I have found via the companies office that it was registered as a company on the 23 May 1958 and dissolved on 28 June 1985. This was part of a government process to put more patients through National Women's. It was then purchased by the Auckland Hospital Board as a geriatric hospital. I have been unable to find out any information about this facility when it was a maternity home. In particular I would like to find out it's street address. Any help would be appreciated. The weather was fine but dull for People's Day at the Canterbury Agricultural Show. Great crowds were in the streets early in the morning, including the usual big gathering of country visitors, and the news of the armistice having been signed was received with wild enthusiasm, which gave promise of being continued later in the day at the show grounds. Marlborough Express, 19 November 1918, Page 5 DEATH OF MR A. W. RUTHERFORD. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 19. Influenza is still raging, but there is slight evidence that the position is becoming easier. Reports show 2550 cases, nearly 200 being acute or serious. Among yesterday's deaths was Mr A. W. Rutherford, junr., a, prominent North Canterbury sheepbreeder and well-knwon racehorse owner. His father, a former Member of Parliament, died from similar cause last week. Oamaru Mail, 19 November 1918, Page 3 WAIMATE, November 10. Most of the Waimate influenza cases came from Christchurch, where the show week crowd spread infection disastrously. There has been only one death in Waimate from influenza, and there are not many serious cases here, but every precaution is being taken. The town is almost, deserted, the shop closing every day at 3p.m, to enable employees to take exercise. S. Brown offered a couple of farms in the Papanui district, which had been cut up into suitable sized blocks. Lot 1, 5 acres and 38 perches of Ladbrook's farm on the Harewood Road was purchased by Mr R. A. Bishop, of Papanui, at £87 10s per acre, or a total of £458 5s 6d. Press, 4 May 1908, Page 8 SALE OF AN HISTORIC PROPERTY. An event of decided interest to pioneers and early residents of Christchurch was the selling by public auction by Messrs H. Matson and Co. on Saturday of Reese's Estate, Harewood road, Papanui. Before submitting the various lots, Mr Leicester Mateon referred to the interesting fact that this block of land was originally selected by the late John Reese, who lived on it until the time of his death, which occurred recently at the age of 80. Mrs Reese still resides on the property. The price paid by Mr Reese for the block was £3 per acre. The property had been subdivided into three and four-acre blocks, and a very large number of buyers competed eagerly for the various lots, only two of which remain unsold. The following are particulars of the sale:— Lot 1. comprising 3 acres, located on corner of Harewood road and Reese road, sold to Mr Candy at £126 per acre. Lots 2, 3 and4, sold to Mr W. R. Grant at £107 10s por acre. Lot 5, containing 4 acres 4 perches, £105 per acre, to Mr Candy. Lot 8, comprising 4 acres 2 roods 35 perches, sold to Messrs James Robinson and Wm. McCleery at £101 per acre. Lot 14, containing 3 acres 3 roods 32 perches, to Mr R. Bishop, £87 per acre. Lots 10 and 11, containing 5 acres 17 porches and 3 acres 17 perches respectively, to Mr H J. Beadle at £90 per acre. Lot 13, comprising 3 acres 0 roods 18 perches, to Mr R. A. Forrester, Hurunui, for £82 10s per acre. Lot 12, containing 3 acres 0 roods 18 perches, realise £92 10s per acre, the purchaser being Mr Donald Nicholson. Press, 21 September 1908, Page 7 On Thursday evening a large number of friends gathered in the Harewood Hall to bid farewell to Mr C. Stanley and family, who are about to take up their residence in South Canterbury. The Rev. A. Julius and Messrs Nunweek. Twose and R. Pearce spoke of the energetic and willing services rendered by Mr Stanley and family in the interests of the church and district, and of the great loss their removal entailed. Mr Stanley has been for 25 years a vestryman of St. James's Church, and during 18 years of that period was organist, his daughter, Miss E. Stanley, having succeeded her father in this position. On behalf of the church members the Rev. A. Julius presented to Mr Stanley and family a silver tea and coffee service and a silver-mounted oak tray, suitably inscribed. Mr Stanley briefly replied.

    3. Hi Brian, Was it My Heritage? http://myheritage.com/ If that was the case, I would expect that you've registered there and put up a family tree at some stage; it's free to do that. My Heritage is very good, I've found, for matching up people in trees, so you can get in touch with your distant relatives. Like other similar services, if you pay their subscription fee you can then initiate/make contact with others, but if you choose to use only the free services you have to wait to be contacted. If Carolyn contacted you via My Heritage, you should be able to reply whether you're a paid subscriber or not. Go to the site and log in to your own account. Once you're there, look for the envelope near the top right-hand corner of the window - that's your Inbox. Click on it, and you'll see any messages held in it. If someone has sent a message to you this way, you can reply to it there. You get your own "home page" when you set up your account at My Heritage. I've found that most people don't take the time to make any changes to the default, so they miss out on an opportunity to make it easier for people to contact you. You can make the text say whatever you want, so I've included my email address for all to see, so you don't have to have paid the sub to get hold of me. To make changes to your home page, click on "Edit this text" in the Welcome bar near the top of the screen. Some may say that putting my email address in plain sight like that makes me more vulnerable to receiving spam. My address is already elsewhere on other web sites, and has been for 15+ years now, and I have a good handle on managing what spam does come in - Google are very good at filtering it to the appropriate folder, and I check it regularly before deleting the contents. You can see my My Heritage home page at http://www.myheritage.com/site-150195082/wendy-howards-family Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy (also ex-Shore, but I didn't move quite so far away!) *** Please reply to the list.
