    3. Has anybody knowledge of whether Maj-General Sandy Thomas, the NZ WW2 hero, is still alive? I know he went to live in Queensland many years ago. He had been a friend of my father, now deceased, here in NZ and we've wondered about Maj-General Thomas a lot lately and would be glad to know if he is still with us. I'm sure he's tough enough to be marching proudly at age 95. Judith Harper

There appears to be a large difference in their ages, but James may have been married previously before he came out to Nelson in 1842. Cheers David Cavanagh Adelaide South Australia.

    3. Hi Gail & List, I saw your posts about New Zealand's independence from NSW. You have certainly made a success of independence. You no doubt know that New Zealand was a party to the 10 years or so of discussion and conferences leading to the joining together of the six Australian colonies in 1901. Given the distance across the Tasman Sea it was no doubt a wise decision at the time although Auckland is closer to Sydney & Melbourne than Perth. You probably know that the Preamble to the Constitution sets out those who may belong to the Commonwealth of Australia and lists New Zealand first. Whatever, you have always been our closest friend, and the only country in the world that is fair dinkum with us on trade. In a speech to Parliament on the attack in Ottawa on the Canadian parliament our Prime Minister spoke of Canada as being one of our closest friends after New Zealand. I even admire the All Blacks, even when we have on occasion beaten them they have been great; my admiration is long held, in fact held as long as has my ardent wish for the Wallabies to beat them. 3. Hi Jan Obituary from NZ Herald 4 Dec 1937: Thomas Ernest Pierce The death occurred at the Whangarei District Hospital yesterday of Mr Thomas Ernest Pierce, aged 65. Mr Pierce first lived at Orange, New South Wales, and came to New Zealand 35 years ago. He farmed at Ruakaka for some years and them came to Whangarei. He is survived by his wife and 11 children. A Thomas Pierce was born in Newcastle 1872 to Joseph Henry and Johanna. This seems the only Thomas Pierce born NSW in the period 1870-1874.
