    1. [nz] Re O D Cruickshank
    2. Jo Featherston via
    3. Hi John and Penne, You might be interested to know that the mystery has been solved by Tim, a very kind person who watches this mailing list. He found and sent me a reference to an article on Paperspast that explains what happened. The name of O D Cruickshank appears in a list of 32 men who were returned to NZ because they had refused to be inoculated with anti-typhoid serum in Egypt. Clearly even back then some people were not keen on vaccinations. They probably had a hard time explaining why they had come home, and living down the idea that they were cowards, but in my grandfather's case at least, you could say he lived to fight another day. His refusal might also have had something to do with his religion, which according to his enrolment papers was unitarianism, a group that believes in God but not in the holy trilogy. Perhaps they were anti-inoculations for some religious reason. Another thing to look into! Oliver's Scottish forebears were Presbyterians, and wherever his unitarianism came! from, it was not passed on to his son/my father, who was basically an agnostic. Sent from my iPad

    3. Hi Jenny, Perhaps you should direct your question to the NZSG to clarify license conditions etc.? If it is acceptable under the license conditions, you may need to use software like Virtual Drive or similar which creates Virtual CD drives and allows you to create an "Image" or "virtual disk" on your hard drive of the disk which you then "load" into one of the virtual drives created. 2. Terry Leaman via
    3. Many years ago I was contacted by someone in New Zealand about the above person, he lived in Napier, was born 20th May 1907 and he died in 2002. The question at the time was about his father William Henry Hooper who was born in Torquay, Devon, England in 1872. I have unfortunately lost the contact details, if this was you or you know who it might have been that contacted me, please get in touch. I think I have solved the mystery surrounding Wm Henry Hooper. Terry Leaman Torquay Devon.

Troops to Egypt 1914 Discharge Mystery I don't think Oliver had a health problem, as the discharge paper just said that his services were no longer required, and then he served in Europe when he re-enlisted in 1916. He was 92 when he died, so any possible health problem couldn't have been too serious :-)
