    3. Hi Folks, The 'Six o'clock Swill' - as it was known, was especially bad on a Friday evening when workers (blue collar and office) would saddle up to the bar at their favourite pub after work and drink until closing time at 6pm. Then it was a rush from the bar, out around the corner to the bottle department to buy supplies to take off home for the weekend's social events. I worked in Molesworth Street, Wellington and regularly caught up with friends who worked in other branches of the BNSW at a hotel not too far from the Railway Station. Just before the six o'clock closing there'd be a mad rush to the bottle department and taxis would be lined up along the kerbside to take their clients home. Cheers Ainslie.

    3. Hi again Jenny Just found a cremation record for Henry Herbert BUNKENBURG who was cremated in 1983: http://wellington.govt.nz/services/community-and-culture/cemeteries/cemeteries-search/details?id=52251&serviceType=Cremation&previousPage=%2fservices%2fcommunity-and-culture%2fcemeteries%2fcemeteries-search%2fresults%3fserviceType%3dAll%26lastName%3dBunckenburg%26fromDate%3d01%252f01%252f1840%26toDate%3d17%252f11%252f2014%26cemetery%3dAll there is also a record for H H BUNKENBURG on Archway: http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewEntity.do?code=W4599 I also note that the couple are on several electoral roles between1946-72 in Karori, Wellington and then from 78-81 in Ohariu, Wellington. It appears they likely had at least one son as in the later years there is a male with the same last name and the same address on the role and often when this happens it is an adult child still living at home with the parents. Wynne is also on the 1935 and 1938 Electoral roles in Wellington under her maiden name of NORRIE. 3. I had a couple of off list replies (not sure if that was intentional or not) They said the 6pm last orders was to stop men spending all night in the pub, I can understand the though but why did they need to? Its obvious to most that it matters not when the last orders is set, there will always be the last minute rush for a last one before closing You only have to look at the way they drink into the wee small hours here when they relaxed licensing laws to make a "Continental Cafe culture" that worked didn't it Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 16/11/2014 11:16, Nivard Ovington wrote: > Hi Dave > > Seems odd that they would open during the working day and close at 6pm > > What was the reasoning behind that? > > I am assuming a pub there was the same as a pub in the UK

    2. kayandgregb via
    3. Hi all listers Just a quick one. When did giving a child a middle name start and when did it become usual? Both my parents born in the first decade of the 20th century had a forename and a middle name. Both my grandfathers [one born Scotland] had the same. Only one of my grandmothers [born Scotland] did and the other did not. Of my great grandparents only two g'g'mothers had more than one forename [one born Ulster, one born Scotland]. Of their siblings it seems to hit or miss. Time scale - g'parents early 1880s. g'g'parents 1842 to 1856
