    3. here's my reply last year to another question about land records. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/new-zealand/2013-10/1382395992 The last entry for a piece of land in the old deeds system has a reference enabling it to be traced in the new transfer system. Searching the old deeds involves a labyrinthine search through multiple old heavy registers whereas the new system summarises all transactions on one piece of paper. 3. Hoping to learn that there are some descendants on this list for Andy Gregor, he was Policeman in early Greytown, had a bike made especially for him, as he was rather TALL, in todays Times Age on page 7 and its on line this paper, an article about Andy and his wife Elsie, he was a mere two meters tall, I have seen the bike down at New Zealand Police Museum. He is holding a tennis racquet. This bike is on loan to Cobblestones which the new entrance will be officially opened this Saturday, I was so lucky, I came home in time for this event, as had no idea when it was to be, when I left early October.. Other items on display will be butchers cart from Carterton, must be Deller's as seen it in the complex when I used to be a volunteer opening the complex, then a horse-drawn butterfly gig made by Waggs of Masterton... Lets hope the rain keeps away for a good afternoon in Greytown! I can scan the article to anyone if necessary.. -- Adele Pentony-Graham Carterton Cemetery Clareville Researcher Carterton Researcher. and Featherston. WW1. Cemetery.

    1. Re: [nz] Pub opening hours 1930
    2. John Wilson via
    3. Hi All: Re bar opening and closing hours, 6 pm closing came in as a WWI war measure in 1917. After 6 pm, 15 minutes (?) to finish your drink. Bar opening at 9am as someone said. The "Six O'Clock Swill" was chronicled in "Grogs Own Country" (1959, 1967) by Conrad Bollinger. Pre-WWI there was a strong Prohibitionist )Temperance) movement, supported by many woman suffragists like Kate Sheppard. A 1949 referendum kept it at 6 pm, then a 1967 referendum brought in later closing. Initially to 10 pm and (I think) not on Sundays. Later of course bars vould say open much later, at present the Wellington City Council is debating whether city bars should close at 3am or 5am. With Sunday and late opening quite a few chartered clubs (eg workingmans clubs, and RSAs for returned soldiers) have been closing. Even in the old days the West Coast (of the South Island) was noted for having its own unofficial rules! And it was possible to have a drink in the bar before a meal on Sundays. Another WWI rule was "no shouting" or buying a round. A story about a drinker who was challenged carrying a number of handles for the group. He told the policeman they were all for him, and the cop said "I'll wait while you drink them then". Apparently the last one was the hardest! In a 1919 referendum Prohibition was nearly carried, being lost after the overseas soldiers' votes were counted. In the 1900s there was a vote in each electorate, and the tendency in the larger centres for the central city to stay "wet" while the surroundindg suburbs went dry. In Wellington the Tramway Hotel in Adelaide Road was just on the city side of the boundary. 3. Being a young teen during the 1950/60s and working in Queen st Auckland, I had the ordeal of daily walking past several pubs towards my bus, one in particular had double hung sash windows, where brawny workman usually in singlets in the "Public",no women allowed there in those days" in a very un PC manner whistled and cat called at females, offering all sorts of pleasures. The smell of that beer remains with me still. Not the civilised? drinking of today, beers mugs overflowing onto the floor was common, stockpiling numbers of jugs as the dreaded 6 o'clock loomed. Aptly named the 'six o'clock swill' it influenced my decision in the referendum? vote? sometime in the 1970s for Pubs selling food could extend their hours. Thus the Bistros, counter meals were born. Whether it was good or not ,is a moot point, certainly today there are many other recreational choices for men. Looking at Papers Past drink (mostly beer in those days) as top shelf was beyond most working peoples means, played a huge part of early arrests.
