    3. Hello Chris An interesting book I found in the library was "Eureka, the unfinished Revolution" by Peter FitzSimons. One of my Sallabank ancestors went to Ballarat from England in about 1850, and it was fascinating to hear about what happened there. 3. For your man returning to NZ the Society's "Victorian Outwards to NZ 1852-1923" CD would be useful. As to when he went there he would have travelled on an ordinary passenger ship not an emigrant vessel. If he was well known there might be something about him leaving in the local paper - could be on Papers Past. Sometimes shipping columns of papers list outgoing passengers as well as those arriving. Expect to see Mr Fuller with no initial but it is not a common name which could be helpful. An ancestor was a goldminer in Victoria and I found his name frequently in Trove the Australian equivalent of Papers Past but that was because he was a mine owner. Remember gold mining took place in many parts of Victoria, not just Ballarat and Bendigo. My man was in the east in Gippsland in the southern end of the Greaat Dividing Range. Have a good look for the subject in google Miners' rights (licences) have rarely survived in Vic records. If you can find the locality he was in then try the State Library and State Archives. Does anyone know what this means please. I was just trying to confirm that his birth registration took place in the Wanganui District. Many thanks for any help received. Regards Judy Berntsen

Hi Margaret If you use FreeBMD you can find the Registry Office which issues the certificate (click on the registry district in the entry. eg St George in the East records are held at Tower Hamlets). Then you can order direct from them online. Works for me! 2. ljhewett via
    3. Dr David Gibb JOHNSTON was my grandfather's older brother who initiated the immigration of his siblings and widowed mother to Carterton back in the early 1890's. I have managed to build up some records on his son David Gibb Provan Johnston and his subsequent marriage, plus his military record. I would love to make contact with any current descendants. The fact I would love to find is when my greatgrandmother Mary Johnston (nee Gibb) and her children John, George, Maggie (or Margaret) William and James sailed to N.Z. Recent assistance from a younger family friend discovered Dr. David Gibb Johnston wife and 2 children sailed back to N.Z. (after a visit back to the UK and Scotland) on the Ruapehu - a very new steamer - leaving London 13.09.1893 arriving Wgn. 4.11.1893 - so a speedy trip. I have not been able to find the other family members on the ship- although there is a Miss Johnston among the 'Misses' . There is also mention of Dr. Johnston and 2 of the older brothers in the Tinui Store history found on Google. Any information will be appreciated thank you. Marcia Roberts/Les Hewett, Napier

    3. Can anyone let me know the most cost effective way of ordering Birth & Death Records from the UK? I require a number of look-ups first to determine the correct ones before I go ahead and order. Ordering directly from the GRO one cannot enter the parents names to ensure the correct ones are sent. This method is hit and miss. Thank you Listers. Margaret Armstrong

    3. Hi Margaret There are two ways to obtain certificates From the GRO covering all of England & Wales Ease of ordering, credit card orders accepted, postage paid anywhere Although you may be able to identify the right certificate from freebmd, you can if you know the parents order without the GRO index reference, which allows checking points to be added (ie parents names) NB the mothers maiden name was added to the GRO index in mid 1911 and spouses surname added to the index in 1912 OR From the local register office First you need to know where the persons event was registered, although the GRO index reference may help to identify the registration office the local offices do not recognise the GRO index refs They are usually more expensive and take longer to receive Some local offices try to put enquirers onto the GRO, presumably due to staff shortages However, before ordering any certificates it is worth checking to see if the information can be found in the growing number of Parish registers available online at Ancestry or Findmypast Parents may be found from a baptism which may lead to identifying the correct birth certificate if still required If the marriage can be found in PRs it will contain the same details of the GRO certificate plus may be signed buy the couple and witnesses If a burial can be found it may again identify the correct death certificate if still required To see what can be expected on a certificate see http://www.dixons.clara.co.uk/Certificates/indexbd.htm If you know the County of the event and years let me know and I may be able to help you with the best source of Parish registers PS bar marriages found in Parish registers the general public cannot look at the civil registers at the GRO or local offices Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 24/11/2014 23:08, Margaret Armstrong via wrote: > Can anyone let me know the most cost effective way of ordering Birth & Death > Records from the UK? 3. There are some BMD sites of use, eg the BathBMD website is great for mothers names (just Google it). Another way to check bmds is to see if vaccination records are available, the details being from the birth and death registers locally.  Eg bath archives have the bath ones. You don't have to pay for a cert with the vac data.  I don't know what vac data is like elsewhere. Peter Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android

    1. [nz] Joy Patricia ?? 18 October 1918
    2. David Cavanagh via
    3. Firstly I would like to thank all those replies to my question several weeks ago on James and Charlotte Gibbs of Wakefield. My next question may well be harder to answer, I recently found a birth certificate that was attached to a military record belonging to Robert McNaughton of Wrights Bush in Southland. The certificate states that a Joy Patricia was born 18th October 1918 at Wrights Bush, a surname was not recorded, and a father not recorded, her mother was listed as Bridget McNaughton nee Ryan of Wright's Bush. Bridget is my grandmother's sister and the wife of Robert. We know that Robert and Bridget divorced on his return from Europe (WW1) and that Joy was born shortly afterwards. Family lore has it that Bridget possibly remarried but I have not been able to find a marriage record that would fit the known details, the other possibility is that she just assumed the man's name, she is also thought to have been buried at Bluff. But there again without a surname I cannot confirm this. After the divorce the four children Bridget and Robert had together were put into some sort of care/orphanage and it is a possibility that Joy Patricia had the same fate. A cousin in Invercargill has looked up the school records for Bluff and Wrights Bush but cannot find anything on Joy in either of them, the next option is to spread out the search. My question is this: does anyone have a Joy Patricia in their records with a birth date of the 18th October 1918, but cannot find a birth certificate, or failing that has a birth date but no parents due to adoption maybe? If so I would be really interested in conferring notes to see if we have a common connection. I realise this is a needle in a haystack but if I put the question out there maybe one day someone will have an answer for me. Thanks David Cavanagh Adelaide South Australia.
