    3. Hi Cathie , This is not an answer to your question. Maybe worth a read , though Cheers, Ray Hi Tony what a lot of data, I can see you've been busy !! Sadly (I'd have loved to lay some claim to your lot !! ) we don't seem to have a link. My earliest CAIRNS was Adam b abt 1786 lived and died in Cambusnethan, LKS as did all his descendants. The first to emigrate was my grandfather ,Thomas Somerville CAIRNS ,in 1879 followed by his brother and several in-laws (his wife was Annie MITCHELL,her ancestors came from Bovevagh,Ire ). I've no doubt they originally all came from Ireland but haven't looked back further as yet. My CAIRNS family were coalminers working in Glentunnel,Canterbury then moving to Kaitangata,Otago where Thomas was mayor for many years. Some of his chn ended up in Dunedin,Westport and one in Wellington (killed by a tram ). Sorry I'm not much help, its not a common name out here I thought !! Good luck in your search though, its a great wee hobby Cheers Moira Moira Edge [moira.edge@clear.net.nz] On Thu, Dec 4, 2014 at 11:20 AM, Cathy Dowie via <new-zealand@rootsweb.com> wrote: > In 1906 my great-grandfather, Thomas Somerville Cairns, travelled by ship > from New Zealand to Scotland to visit family. 3. The cap badge is most likely British. The flying dragon emblem was used by Brecknockshire Battalion soldiers in WW1. It may also be the "Buffs" Royal Kent East Regiment which is a British Regiment that existed from 1572 to 1961 and has used the same flying Dragon Motif. https://www.google.com.au/search?q=ww1+nz+officer's+badges&biw=1093&bih=461& source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=8bV_VMvfKof68QXj4oGIAw&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ#tbm=isch &q=brecknockshire+army+badge&facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=oz9ybqn0V3su3M%253A%3BDj Aw8tQPIOrLJM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fthumbs3.ebaystatic.com%252Fd%252Fl225%252F m%252FmvTE9l2EXxIwrMKFAylUysw.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.com.au%252Fs ch%252F1914-1918-WWI-%252F13962%252Fi.html%253FCountry%253DIsrael%2526Campai gn%253D!%3B210%3B225 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffs_(Royal_East_Kent_Regiment) Cheers Bob -----Original Message----- From: new-zealand-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:new-zealand-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Olwyn Whitehouse via Sent: Thursday, December 4, 2014 3:52 AM To: new-zealand Subject: [nz] Unknown soldiers, probably from the Canterbury area http://ketechristchurch.peoplesnetworknz.info/site/images/show/16007-world-w ar-i-officer#.VH88B7ctCUk WW1 officer, what is that badge? http://ketechristchurch.peoplesnetworknz.info/site/images/show/15994-unknown -soldier#.VH88M7ctCUk Is this WW2? http://my.christchurchcitylibraries.com/blogs/post/christchurch-photo-hunt-2 014-the-winners/ Caravan, car and the ubiquitous thermette What type of car and year? 1939 photo The List Guidelines http://new-zealand-l.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NEW-ZEALAND-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Hi Olwyn I think the car in the camping photo is a Buick Roadster approx 1927 and may be the "Standard six" model. (see rather long url below) The painted line along the side, the chrome rimmed painted headlights and radiator frame shape are the telltale signs I have gone by. What do you think? 3. I am looking for photos, especially old ones, and any info on the following old Waipu homes. 1. John McLean and his wife Mary Morrison. They were called the "Cave" McLeans as their home was near the Waipu Caves. Who lived there after the McLeans left?, when did they leave? 2. John McLean and his wife Margaret McKay. Their home was on the Finlayson Brook Road and was known as "Maitlands" These are for a project being done for the Waipu Museum. Thank you Annette

    1. Re: [nz] "Waihora" March 1893
    2. Helen via
    3. Hi Olwyn Sorry it has taken me so long to reply but I have been finding out what I can. I have found the years in NZ on death certificates I have bought are quite inaccurate because of course the person filling them in may not know exactly. I do have years in NZ on one of the boys army record and that puts his arrival in NZ as 1897. The family did not come from Victoria, they came from Tasmania. The last event found in Tasmania was November 1892, there are no BDM events in NZ until the first child married in 1907, the family were in Masterton then. It is made harder because there is another Langdon family at the same time in the same area. The number of children is right, there were five children. But I guess what I really need is some more detail from the passenger list, an initial or age. And where was Mr Langdon? He probably came over first. Mrs Langdon did have two sisters in Hororata/Ashburton at this time. Any ideas welcome. 3. Hi Sue: The marriage date is 20/3/1907 from the RG website, but I could not see a marriage notice in Papers Past (newspapers online) for about that date, and the NZSG Burial Locator CD did not have any couples of those exact names buried together. Yours, John Wilson http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=p&p=about&e=-------10--1----0-- You can get the exact date of "historic" BDMs from 1875 by gradually restricting the dates searched between (generally halving the range each time). Eg for a birth shown as 1885/11456 start with 1/1/1885 to 30/12/1885 (or 1/1/1886, quicker to type). Then Jan-June (say) then Jan-Mar to get the month then halve, quarter the month etc. But some births may have been registered late in the previous year or earlier (eg re-registration of an adoption), so if 1885/11456 is not in 1885 try say 1/10/1884 to 1/1/1885. Note: order is DMY.
