Hi Beverley, Arthur Fleetwood Christchurch bricklayer R23031923 AAOM 6031 W3265 8 / 0724/47 Just in case you weren't aware of these - Family Search have done some of the NZ probates but alas your man is not there: https://beta.familysearch.org/search/collection/1865481 Bryan
Apparently the Ship Papua, was lost in abt 1875. I am trying to find anything about te man and what happened to the ship. He was from Waipu, so maybe it was to do with the shipbuilders up there and the Islands? Regards Jan Sent from Windows Mail
>From 'Lost Cousins' newsletter : New Zealand cemetery records Over 1.6 million cemetery records previously only available on microfiche or in printed form have been released by Ancestry <http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-1793701-10819001?sid=NZcemetery&url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.co.uk%2Fsearch%2Fdb.aspx%3Fdbid%3D60547> - you can search them here <http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-1793701-10819001?sid=NZcemetery&url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.co.uk%2Fsearch%2Fdb.aspx%3Fdbid%3D60547>. According to Ancestry they cover the period 1800-2007, but I found a few entries from 2008. (Thanks to Colyn in Australia for this news.) *Tip: some apparently later entries have been mistranscribed - where only a death date and age at death is given the death date has sometimes been treated as the date birth. For example, Daphne Merle Marks, who passed away on her 44th birthday in 1970, is shown as having been born in 1970 and having died in 2014. I suspect that some of the earlier entries suffer from the same problem, but as yet I haven't had time to check.* On Wed, Dec 10, 2014 at 8:57 AM, Allan via <new-zealand@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > Hi folks, > > Great resource. > > Live from today on Ancestry. > . > NZ Cemetery records 1800 to 2007. > > These transcriptions of headstones from cemeteries in New Zealand > typically include details such as name, birth date, death date, and the > cemetery name and plot location. > But they may also provide family relationships with name and other details > about a spouse, cause of death, military dates, an epitaph, or even a > description of the headstone. > > Regards > Allan > > > The List Guidelines > > http://new-zealand-l.blogspot.com/ > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > NEW-ZEALAND-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

Any lister with family links to any of these Johnstons ?? Mary J. appears as a domestic on passenger list (Google British Empire 1864). She could have been on board to help with all these children? Looks like a family and possible rellies came together on British Empire 1864. Passenger list gives: JOHNSTON: Alexander 41, Jane 41, Isabella 21 dairy worker, William 22, Mary 20, Jane 18, John 18, Agnes 15, Alexander 11, William 9, James 5, Elizabeth 2. Were William and Isabella couple? Did Alexander remain in Canterbury or move away? Anything further appreciated. Les H., Napier.
Have you tried contacting the Army Museum at Waiouru? I don't know whether they will have the answer but you never know!! Hello All I thought I would copy this poem here, I have never seen a poem in the main part of the newspaper written as an In Memoriam this is for Napier Gordon Glassford who was driving a buggy, the hoses bolted, he fell out onto the back of his head and was killed, he was Commodore of the Union Rowing Club among other things. He must have been very well thought of. Beverley Evans Christchurch NZ *Monday 7 June 1875* Funeral write up -** *GLASSFORD* - Mr N.G. about 200 persons --- lots more --- *A Poem to N. G. GLassford* - In Memoriam - We laid him in his grave, and stalwart men Were not ashamed to mourn his loss in tears He taught us year by year the sterling truth That to ensure sound mental calibre The body must be strong as well as brain. And more than any mode of noble sport He loved the art of rowing and would school The novice in his unassuming way And many oarsman in our midst affirms That from his maxims his own style was learnt Wherewith his laurel-leaves were justly earned Good heart! farewell! we love thee better now Better reposing in the light of God Better to leave the weariness of life Better to rest from temporary toil And wait till those who love thee follow thee His absence is not all a loss. He tells The generation after him to strive, To gird themselves unto the dire affray Of life's most ardent battle where his men Who, trained with head erect and dauntless gait, Intend to win, let come what may, And those Are they, who in coming years, will prove That they themselves are born of Englishmen, And Gordon Glassford's name will be revered. -- http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~ashleigh/ transcriber of old newspapers. --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. http://www.avast.com
