    1. Re: [nz] New Zealand death certificates
    2. Wendy Howard via
    3. Hi Norman, You asked: "Could someone on the list advise what information I can expect to find on a New Zealand death certificate. For example, in the case of a woman, does it list her children if known.?" All death registrations after 1875 record the age and sex of any "living issue", ie the children of the deceased who are still alive. Names are not given, but you may be able to go to the birth indexes (either online or the older microfiche) and match them to registrations there - assuming the children were born in New Zealand. Information about a person's children might be found in their will, or death notices in newspapers (start at http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/ for historical events), or in school records. As Graham posted, the official information on death registrations is found at https://bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/datacollected/death.aspx Note, however, that here in New Zealand we do not recommend obtaining *certificates* for family history purposes. There is an alternative available, called a printout. Information about this is on that web page, but may not be obvious to a newcomer to our records. For the most part, a printout is simply a photocopy of the Registrar's book* - so you get all the information that was gathered at the time, in the original handwriting from the register (though this may itself be a transcription from the original document). A certificate, on the other hand, is produced when you order it - so there is a risk of (further?) transcription errors in its production. A certificate also contains only the information that the law says it must, so not all data gathered is necessarily found there. For events after 1874, the printout is cheaper than the certificate. Before that, they're the same price. * There are exceptions where you will get a literal printout of a transcription from the register, and this can't be avoided when ordering from BDM. It happens when a book is too fragile to photocopy, or the registration contains information deemed 'sensitive', such as mention of an illegitimacy in a birth record. This is a relatively modern interception, so it may be that others who have ordered the same item in the past have received the full record. Collections such as the New Zealand Society of Genealogists' Certificates Collection are a good source of document, where you might find what you're looking for (and more) for a lot less than you'd spend on the same documents direct from BDM. This is a service provided to society members only, so you need to join to gain access to this collection and other useful member-only resources. http://genealogy.org.nz/ Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy ***Please reply to the list, not to me directly.***

    3. Hi All: Re the (disconnected) Christchurch telephone number given, 03 980-5411, it would have been a telephone number of another service provider like Telstra Clear or Vodafone as Christchurch numbers of Telecom (now Spark) in Christchurch statrted with 03 and first digit 3 (though 03 is used for the whole of the South Island). For a local call from Christchurch to her the number was 980-5411. First digit Dial 9 or one impulse was not used in the days of NZPO rotary dial phones as it was likely to get false calls from open wires banging together, so was free for use when other companies needed a number range. On New Zealand rotary dials digit 9 is in the same position as Digit 1 in most of the world, ie NZ rotary dials went 0, 1, 2, …. 9.not 0, 9, etc. Hence the 111 emergency service number 111 is the same as the British 999 (North America uses 911). See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_numbers_in_New_Zealand Yours, John Wilson > From the number, I wonder if it may be a different Telco from Telecom. > Most Telecom numbers are 03 3.. > I'd even try 03 380 5411 - just in case you've got it transposed. > June has a property still in her name at this time. > She does not appear in the online deaths, which if she had passed away and > was over 80, she would. > > I rang the number you gave - 03 9805411 - and got the 'no such number' > tone - it is disconnected. >
