Thanks for your message Rob, they are indeed the two that I am tracing. I have now discovered that they were married in Kent before coming to NZ. The next step is to track down their children. Hello Looking for a death notice after 1 June 1998, of Ruth Eunice ATKINSON. Last known address Tauranga. Many thanks Jocelyn
I agree all Heritage buildings should have a plaque on including my wee cottage! If the buildings had a plaque on, more people would learn history and be interested, only recently here in Carterton two errors have surfaced on photographs in the local paper with incorrect information, had there been a Council Heritage sign on the buildings errors wouldnt appear like they do, most recent one is Carterton Court House, sorry re word it to read Court House Carterton two different meanings, as our old Court House is in Holloway Street, vacant at present awaiting attention, but the one in the paper did not start up in Carterton but I believe in Masterton around 1860s, years before the true Carterton Court House was built. Going back to the 1990s, Heritage Trails started up in Wairarapa, but not all Heritage buildings were listed, sad to say, and never been carried on. Only last weekend, I opened my door, to an enquiry, did I know the history of my property, I said yes, who first owned the land before the cottage was built, then who built it, first owner right through to today, me... I said why, oh we are looking for a family that possibly lived here, gave me the name, said sorry, never owned this one, but possibly rented it.. but he has a photograph and will scan it to me on his return home, so looking forward to that, then I maybe able to locate it, but I did ring up the previous owner off my cottage, she thinks the name was on the Main Road at Clareville and the children attended school at Clareville with her family. By having callers like this, we can learn more about folk who were here earlier... so look forward to him contacting me, gave him my business card so he has all the ways to get hold off me. First owner of my cottage was James Burton Penny, they moved to Hughes Line, what an interesting family this is... know a lot about them, then Charles Dakin who built the cottage lived here and so it goes on to 1991 The Graham's! Hi Jan: Re hotels in Onehunga, I checked the Wises Directory for 1902 (Onehunga is listed under O, not under Auckland). There are several hotels in Onehunga but no Wynyard or Wynyard Arms Hotel/Tavern that I could see. The listings for Onehunga are by name or by name and street, with some names having the trade or profession added. If you are looking for a particular person who was a hotelkeeper in Onehunga could you advise his name please, as he may be one of the hotelkeepers listed below, or may be on an electoral roll with a hotel address. Here are the 1902 hotelkeepers in Onehunga: Princess St: Exchange Hotel, Edward Keating Victoria St: Victoria Hotel, Nicholas Brown Queen Street: Hibernian Hotel, Robt Ternahan Manukau Hotel, Stephen Keogh Prince Albert Hotel, J Schollum Temperance Hotel, Wm Barr Terminus Hotel, A Bishop PS: Papers Past has reports in 5 or 6 December 1906 of a burglary at the Wynyard or Wynyard Arns Hotel, which was in Wellesley Street. rms Hotel was definitely on the corner of Symonds and Wellesley Streets: I lived in the area more years ago than I care to reveal !! The Auckland City Council of the 70s/80s has a lot to answer for. Yvonne

Hi All: The Auckland Library has a "heritage image" Winkelmann photo online (No 1-W751) which includes the "Wynyard Arms Hotel, now the Kiwi Hotel" in a photo looking east from St Matthews Church to Albert Park. I have an Original Odhner calculator with little sliding levers that can be moved up and down and a button that moves the register sideways as you progress through the calculation. We used to use these all the time for foreign currency calculations in the bank (I'm talking about the 1950s-1960s). With a little practice we could get accurate checkable results very quickly. One big advantage was they didn't use electricity.
