    3. Hi Penne Yes thanks although I must check again in case something else has been added, the Edhouse name isn't easy to look for though as it doesn't usually show up in searches when it's supposed to. Luckily they were involved in a little scandal so managed to find a lot about that in Papers Past!! To my knowledge John was the only Edhouse to come out to NZ so all here are related (including me). 3. Have you looked at Papers Past Sue? John Edhouse has a reference, Otago Witness , Issue 610, 25 January 1862, and a death. Timaru Herald, Volume XXIII, Issue 1260, 24 September 1875, very much a schoolmaster. http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast cheers penne ---- Original Message ----- From: "Sue king via" <new-zealand@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 17, 2015 9:19 AM Subject: Re: [nz] 58th Regiment of Foot & the Egmont > Hi > > My man; John Edhouse & his father-in-law John Nesbitt/Nestbit/Nestbit) was > with the 58th in Bombay 1863 under Major Holt. 3. Sue, George, John and William NESBITT from Gibraltar (no occupations given) took their discharge in NZ 1850, 1850 and 1855 respectively. They were all Privates. 2284 John NESBITT enlisted at Chatham 1844 at age 14y 9m. The other two enlisted 1842. No EDHOUSE listed in Hughes book - which means your John didn't take his discharge here. 3. Hi Sue and Graham, Just to add my tuppence worth. My Great Grandfather who was with the 2nd Battalion/14th (Buckinghamshire) Regiment of Foot. When his Regiment moved from NZ about 1866/7, onto Australia enroute to England they served in several places around Aus including Port Arthur and Adelaide. He was granted his discharge in April 1869 prior to the Regiments final journey back to England, having served his time and promptly returned to his wife and family who were in resident in Napier where he had served the majority of his time while in New Zealand. Unfortunately his discharge does not show up in the Hughes Book although his official docs show he was returned to Napier on discharge. He had married at the Curragh Barracks in Ireland prior to departure to NZ in 1860. I am sure that he wouldn't have been the only one to have been given the same choice. Just mentioning those details as it is possible your family may have done the same or similar and that is why they don't appear in the Hughes listing. Hope that is of some help and doesn't confuse your research. 3. Hi Jenny and All: Re the New Zealand electoral rolls on Ancestry, they have been scanned from 1853 to 1981 and all can be browsed, but not all have been indexed, as stated on the introductory page. Hence a name search will find only the years indexed (asterisked *) , so exluding from 1941 the years 1941, 1960, 1966, and 1975. But I would expect the ones asterisked (*) including 1981 to be vomplete. It would be interesting to know if Ancestry plans to extend the indexing to other years, or to scan any later years (I think electoral rolls over 10 years old are regarded as "historic)". Yours, John Wilson > Just finished something I started 4 months ago, I decided to go though all > my NZ Male people and add their occupations, from the NZ electoral rolls > that are on ancestry, The rolls are only up to 1981, in fact I doubt that > all of 1981 is there as there were at lot I couldn't find for 1981, the > reason I only did males was most women are listed as married etc not what > they do. > If you are using the electoral rolls for anything be aware Ancestry have > transcribed some incorrectly, ie Mt Victoria, Wellington comes up as Mt > Victoria Auckland, so as always look at the scans, sometime you find the > adult children still living at home handy, > Cheers Jenny

    3. Hi Sue: The death of George William WIGGINS is not on the Registrar-General's online database, though it does not have a wildcard search option for variant spellings of the surname. The website does have Mary Elizabeth WIGGINS aged 72y and died on 1 June 1952 (found by gradually reducing the date range searched). From the NZSG Burial Locator CD she is buried at Broadwood Cemetery north of Whangarei and between Rawene and Kaitaia. It is mentioned on the Far North District Council website, but is a community not council administered cemetery. She is not on the Council's cemetery database though: There is a Raymond Selwyn Wiggins buried in the same cemetery. The NZSG cemetery microfiche would have more details. http://www.fndc.govt.nz/services/community-facilities/cemeteries#a4 https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/ Yours, John Wilson : Source NZSG Cemetery Fiche Surname WIGGINS Given Names Mary Elizabeth Year of Death 1952 Record Number 128 Record Type B/R Age 72 Location Broadwood Burial Records A04-09 Source NZSG Cemetery Fiche Surname WIGGINS Given Names Mary Elizabeth Year of Death 1952 Record Number 55 Record Type M/I Age 72 Location Broadwood Cemetery A04-01 Source NZSG Cemetery Fiche Surname WIGGINS Given Names Raymond Selwyn Year of Death 1971 Record Number 56 Record Type M/I Age 90 Location Broadwood Cemetery A04-01 > I am trying to find my relative's death index and his burial place, he is > believed to have died on 05/09/1935 in Christchurch, NZ his name is > WIGGINS, George William (aged 58). > > His wife WIGGINS, Mary Elizabeth died in 1952 (1952/21058) I would like > her burial place also. >

    3. Hi Elizabeth: If Ernest William WRIGHT had a small estate it would not to have needed to be probated through a court unless it included property (land) (or if he was intestate?). Wills were usually probated through the nearest Supreme/High Court. Public Trust estates (including many intestate estates) were probated through the Wellington Supreme Court until c1950, but he was later, and his estate may have been handled by a solicitor. Do you know who was making enquiries about his sons, or where Jessie lived? PS: Papers Past only has New Zealand newspapers up to 1945. For probates at Archivces see Research Guide No 2. (Personal Identity) http://archives.govt.nz/research/guides Yours, John Wilson Ernest William Wright is believed to have died in New Zealand around 1960 - a public notice appeared in the Melbourne Sun seeking contact with his two sons, Frederick Alexander and William John Charles Wright. There was a daughter Jessie born 1915 who married Groves in Melbourne in the 1930’s. Ernest was born in Bairnsdale Victoira in 1877, he married Charlotte Catherine Henry in Bairnsdale in 1909 and she died in Sydney in 1917. The two sons, aged about 4 and 6 years, were returned to their maternal grandparents and is seems Jessie remained in his care. Those that had contact re his very small estate in the 1960’s recall his death was in New Zealand. Contact with Jessie’s family was short lived (1960’s) and those that did have since died. Contact with Jessie’s (one of) children have advised that their mother never recalled her childhood! Can anyone help - did he remarry into another family in New Zealand, when did he arrive, was Jessie with him. I am guessing he arrived in the vicinity of 1920’s likely from Sydney possibly with a child or can anyone suggest possible references I can research.
