    3. John, many thanks for this link and pointing it out to us. I have downloaded my form and intend to fill in and send back. I think this is very important to all family historians, either to keep the access as it is or to improve access. I feel if we do not complete the survey then we may lose some access which would be terrible to all us family historians. 1. Re: [nz] WW1 service number A and B
    2. Phil Lascelles via
    3. Hi The A's and B's and I think even a single instance of a C are generally a mechanism to ensure that the NZEF service numbers remain unique ... no two persons ever have the same number. It was used with the early bar numbering system and in a small number if cases to correct duplicate allocation of a later 5 digit serial number. So if a soldier who was in the NZ Engineers, say, he would have had a number like 4/1235 where the 4/ means NZE. If he were transferred to say the NZ Field Artillery he would retain the suffix part of his number and get the new prefix of 2/ which means NZA. Now the suffix would or could already have been used so to avoid the number being duplicated, it is appended A. If the A has already been used for this combination of prefix/suffix, then they used B, then C. Now there was one mass example of this which though not an exception, is the only case of possible interpretation. The British Section, NZEF enlisted in London and travelled to Egypt in Dec 1914 to join up with the Main Body. They comprised NZ Engineers and NZ Army Service Corp. Together they were allocated service number suffix from 1 to about 400. These numbers were then prefixed by either 4/ or 5/ for NZE or NZASC. Now as these numbers had already been allocated to Samoan Advance Force and or Main Body soldiers, the British Section were immediately allocated the appended A, and in some rare cases B if the A had already been used. There were also a very small, maybe 1 or 2, five digit numbers from the newer numbering system generally adopted in 1915/16 that have an A appended. In this case its to fix a problem caused by using the same service number twice. So no meaning generally, just a mechanism. 3. I think Legacy does that if you print a book report. 1. [nz] Mac indexing program?
    2. Margaret Parkes via
    3. Hi, I am looking for someone able to create a small program for Mac computers (or Windows if you are reading this and are interested). Several years ago I had a program which I used to index a published book but have lost it through various OS upgrades. I am unable to remember what it was called and have done extensive research on the web but can not locate it again or find anything similar. The programs I find now are all for indexing material actually on the computer. This was done using an already printed book. The way it worked was this: I entered the page number, then the person’s name (or place, boat etc) as I worked my way through the book page by page. When I went to ‘index’ the data was collated and presented alphabetically as a list like this: Monaghan, J, 80 Moncrieff, Mrs, 138 Moore, F G, 77, 146, 179, 254 Moore, F R P, 255 Moran, D G, 226, 228 This list could then be printed in columns, adjusted for portrait or landscape and sized according to the amount of information. It was such a simple process and with all the un-indexed books with genealogical information I am sure it would be very useful. I am happy to discuss it further and provide a copy of the results if anyone is interested. Margaret
