Does not matter if you know the family or not. I am not talking about the standard brass plaques or grey Soldiers headstones for returned servicepersons but those in general areas of cemeteries which are attached to family plots. If the soldier died and was buried overseas their name will not be recorded in the local Cemetery burial records even though their name is on a headstone so these family memorials can exist but be unknown to family researchers. I have found one where the son-in-law is recorded on the family headstone. I have a file containing 268 photos of such headstones for the Dunedin area cemeteries and I will be adding these as time permits. If any list member is keen and wants advice on how to proceed please don't hesitate to contact me direct. From past experience I know that family researchers appreciate such valuable photos. 3. Perhaps there was a typing error in the address? I see nothing wrong with the one below (as long as the period at the end of the first iteration was not included), I copied it and pasted it into my email search and it successfully located mail that contained it - including mail I've sent to Hugh in the past. Were you using an email program (such as Outlook or Thunderbird), or working directly at the web interface? If you continue to have problems sending to that address, I'd need to see a copy of the email as it was sent, and a copy of the error message, to comment further. Feel free to send me those off-list (ie directly to me, not to the mailing list) if you want me to help you with this. Hope this helps. :-) Wendy Mabel Harvey via wrote on 22/01/2015 00:09: > Hoping someone can help me as I just tried emailing the administrator of > the NZ list with no success. 3. Thank you John. This is an issue of some importance so I would urge you all to make a submission. My attitude is the BDM's (and wills) were always considered to be part of the public record and the current rules are too restrictive. as below The historic data available for you to search is limited so that people or families who might still be alive, can be protected. Information available includes: a.. Births that occurred at least 100 years ago b.. Stillbirths that occurred at least 50 years ago c.. Marriages that occurred at least 80 years ago d.. Deaths that occurred at least 50 years ago or the deceased's date of birth was at least 80 years ago. How can restricting death records to 50 years ago be protecting anybody? My question is what were the rules pre 2009? 3. Hi Murray and others I do not know the official rules pre 2009 eg. legal ones that is. But I can only speak of my own experience. I purchased many years ago now, the full set of the NZ BDM's from 1840/48 - 1990 including the microfiche they had for the Maori BDM's. So I still use them today. Years ago I needed to write/fax my request with my credit card details for any of the records as long as I could provide the details from the microfiche which was Full names, Years, Event, and Folio No. - Then it was a long long wait of an average of 6 weeks in order to get the order back (As I live in Australia the time frame was at least a week longer due to post compared to in NZ) We used to also get with the printouts all the records that were on that one page of the births or deaths - wonderful as often you found other related entries. As times went by things changed and we only received the one entry from the registration page; then the prices changed (cannot remember the dates for when that occurred), so then I limited myself to only purchasing the ones I really needed. But my point here is that until the introduction of the NZ id and the historical records were made available via the Internet, as long as I could provide the Folio No, Year, Full names etc and the Event I had no problem in obtaining a printout of the registered event, either birth, death or marriage. Now I have found it more difficult - as not living in NZ I cannot provide the ID requirements that they want in order to obtain a printout of a registration that is not listed on the Historical Indexes. I have a number of family members who have died in last few years who are under the age of 80yrs and therefore do not show on the Historical database in order for me to order a copy of their death registration printout. I have to admit though that the fact that I can order a printout online and receive it via email within a few days, has been like the bees knees for me and also if I do have an issue, a phone call to the office, I have found anyone I have spoken to, to be most helpful and considerate. I would love to have a wildcard search available as there are so many spelling errors and a few other improvements, but even as the Historical database stands now I would not like to see it lost or gone or access information changed any more for the worse. I do not want to start a massive debate on the pros and cons of the site on this listing - SO ANY COMMENTS PLEASE EMAIL ME DIRECTLY so as not to clog up this mailing list or have the topic go out of hand that Hugh has to step in. But I am urging everyone interested in NZ family history to complete the survey form thank you Ailsa Ailsa Corlett ailsa@st.net.au http://home.st.net.au/~ailsa alternative email if having trouble sending to my normal email is: ailsacorlett@gmail.com >-----Original Message----- >From: new-zealand-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:new-zealand- >bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of mhhr via >Sent: Wednesday, 21 January 2015 2:38 PM >To: John Wilson; new-zealand >Subject: Re: [nz] Records of > >Thank you John. > >This is an issue of some importance so I would urge you all to make a >submission. > >My attitude is the BDM's (and wills) were always considered to be part >of the public record and the current rules are too restrictive. as below > >The historic data available for you to search is limited so that people >or families who might still be alive, can be protected. 3. Thanks for that John, I'll have to lodge a submission about being able to access the non historical records from overseas. I've been living in Brisbane for years now and understood previously that I had to have an iGovt Id, which now appears to be a "Realme" Id but it seems you have to be resident in NZ to front up somewhere with Id to prove your identity :-( Cheers Dave H...
