Hello Adele You say the WW1 soldier on the Greytown War Memorial Gates is: Eric Varnham St GEORGE, 1/432, Wellington Regiment, died of disease after discharge, 9 Sept 1915, buried Karori Cemetery, Wellington. However my research indicates the soldier commemorated on those gates is Eric’s cousin: Frank Clarence St GEORGE M.M., 24/1492, NZ Rifle Brigade, kia, 9 August 1917, buried Belgium. There’s far too much info to include in this post; I suggest you check all the usual authoritative sources including the BDM & CWGC websites, PapersPast, and the two WW1 service files on Archway. Frank was about 17 years older than Eric but the two were first cousins. Frank was born in Greytown in 1878 and was the son of Leonard Shaw St GEORGE and wife, Mary Emily VARNHAM. Leonard was a chemist in Greytown for more than 30 years before moving to Masterton. Leonard & Mary were also the parents of Louis George Varnham St GEORGE who married Mary BAIN in 1900 and was a chemist in Otaki. Eric was born in 1895 (not 1894 as shown on his service file). Eric was the son of Louis Edwin St GEORGE and wife, Emily Davis VARNHAM. Electoral rolls from 1875-76 to 1938, consistently place Louis Edwin in Wright Street, Wellington and he was a clerk/accountant, not a chemist. Eric was a clerk in the Education Dept (a job almost certain to be Wellington-based) before he enlisted at age 19 in August 1914 (probably explains why he put his age up by a year). Seems very unlikely young Eric ever lived in Greytown. Whereas Frank was born in Greytown and in 1908, when Frank was 30 years old, his father was still on the roll as a chemist in Greytown. In other words, Frank was born and grew up in Greytown. He would have been very well known in Greytown, although electoral rolls show he spent several years farming in Taranaki before he went to WW1. Seeing your posting, I thought I’d double check the memorial gates as I drove thru Greytown today. Sometimes the lettering of inscriptions can fade or fall out, making it difficult to identify subtle differences such as F vs E using only a photo. However I was able to physically touch the inscription in perfect daylight today and can assure you it very clearly reads “F V ST GEORGE”. That F has always been an F and has never been an E. I can’t explain why the inscription is FV and not FC. All I can suggest is that Frank’s father died in 1920 and Varnham was a very common name in the wider family; perhaps surviving family simply assumed it was also Frank’s middle name when they put his name forward for inclusion on the memorial. (Also letters C and V are adjacent on a Qwerty keyboard but I doubt the stone mason used a qwerty keyboard in the 1920s!) In my mind there's no doubt the soldier commemorated on the Greytown gates is Frank Clarence St GEORGE M.M., 24/1492. Angela
Hi Listers, In 2011 I wrote an essay on the Norwegian Party who mined gold in the Waitahuna area for more than 40 years which appeared in 'Pick and Shovel, Cradle and Pan. A retired Professor from Canterbury contacted me about writing a book on the members of the Norwegian Party as he has an interest in Gold Mining and he is connected to a member of the party by marriage as one of the party was a stepfather as well as having a son. The wife is in my tree but was not aware she had children to an earlier marriage. I sent a message to a Norwegian list hoping to get photos of farms the men left behind. I must have mentioned passenger lists to Victoria as a chap from Trondheim sent me passenger lists from three other ships, Dawn of Hope 1859, 12 names. Great Tasmania 1860, 18 names, [two related to me]. Southern Empire, 1864, 9 names of which 6 are related to me. Finally the Royal Dane, 1864, 7 names of which 6 are related. There were another three names who came to New Zealand directly? Some of all of these men came onto New Zealand. In 2006 I was sent a photo of 8 men found in a book in Norway who I thought was taken there before the nine men came out on the Southern Empire in 1864. I had never look at the list to know there were 9. I knew of 2 men. That photo has appeared on a closed group on Face Book with the names of some of them and the photo was taken in Westport in 1867. Looking at the names on the Southern Empire, while a number were on this ship, not all names given weren't with this group. I have found a diary for John Olsen Moen on the Royal Dane and a list of people John was writing to or received mail from. Just have to wait for a copy of both of them. If anyone has Norwegian relatives on the four ships, I would like to know who they were. Regards John Reed
Good evening Is there anyone able to go to Christchurch Archives NZ and look up a couple of Sunnyside Hospital files for me to see if there is any information on my chap Maurice Ferrar 5/6/1892 - 20/1/1893? I would like to verify or not that he is my man and of course find out anything about him if he is. I can reciprocate at Auckland Archives if you are prepared to wait a few weeks. Thank you Helen
with thanks Jan Does anyone know whether people can get access to these? Sent from Windows Mail
The soldier named on Greytown Memorial gates with the surname St. George is in fact Eric Varnham St George according to Cenotaph site, the letter E is not clear on the photograph of the gates, it looked like F to me.. The site said the family lived in Wright St Wellington. Died 9 September 1915. There is another St George listed on the Cenotaph. Frank Clarence. Wont be able to check up school records as was told Greytown lost the early ones.. Eric Varnham St George. 1/432. Rifleman. NZ Rifle Brigade. I have a booklet from Otaki Historical Society about the St George family as they moved over there in 1898. had his Pharmacy business. it says Eric's father was Louis Varnham St George born in 1872, but I query that as he married in 1871.. possibly a misprint. Interesting to read about the family though. Adele -- Adele Pentony-Graham Carterton Cemetery Clareville Researcher Carterton Researcher. and Featherston. WW1. Cemetery.

NZ. died Miki Miki north of Masterton 26th October 1898 Married Edwin Pain. 1873. Edward Smith born 26 September 1857 died 1928. After we visited the necessary graves at Clareville, we went to Grassmere as James Smith had lived there in the early days, then to Clareville to see where Henry Farr Smith had been, then down into Carterton to get everything photocopied, pages and pages and pages of history.. he said never expected what you have done for me today, I said I normally do this if people want to know more history of the area and show where they lived... sharing... now to get a huge file to put these dozens of pages in... Some years back, I put him in touch with Mark Broderick, now need to check his email as neither have heard from him off late, may have changed his email address, but had an article in NZSG magazine one time for RITCHIE, but he is also with Smith and Pain families.. Pain of Pain and Kershaw of Martinborough. Henry Farr Smith was a bootmaker here at Clareville. Some years back when down at Martinborough Museum they copied what was in the Pain Bible for me for the Smith family, wonder who donated the Bible to the Museum! I said I was also taken to see the lovely old PAIN homestead and we went inside.. other names for the family are Wm Mein Smith, plaque at Greytown Cemetery. Adele ps. we did stop for sandwiches and a drink at Memorial Square in the sun... I love showing folk around town.. -- Adele Pentony-Graham Carterton Cemetery Clareville Researcher Carterton Researcher. and Featherston. WW1. Cemetery.

Evening Post, 21 January 1920, Page 9 LONDON, 27th November on Sunday last, a unique ceremony, took place at the parish church (St. Mary's) at Walton-on-Thames, where a banner, which, had been made by patients at the No. 2, New Zealand General Hospital, under the supervision of Miss Monro, was consecrated. The material of the banner was heavy khaki-coloured satin, lined with similar satin of a royal red colour, edged with a silken fringe of red and blue, and trimmed with massive cords and tassells of the same colours. Embroidered on the lower portion of the banner in silk were the following names of those New Zealanders who have been buried in the churchyard there: 8/787 Pte. Porter, J. L., O.I. R. 42083 Spr. Fleming, J., N.Z.E.; 13/723 Cpl. Phillips, R. W., A.M.R.; 10/2846 Pte Baker, M. A., W.I.R.; 6/1848 Pte. Cox, W., C.I.R.; [sic: FOX, William] 16/779 Pte. Wairau, N.Z. P.B. 9/903 Sgt. Begg, C.M., N.Z.M.C. The central feature of the upper part of the banner is the New Zealand "Onward" badge, surmounted by a crown, supported on either side by the figures 1914-1918. The design is flanked on one side with the Union Jack and on the other by the New Zealand Ensign, the staffs being held together by a scroll bearing the words: New Zealanders interred in Walton-on-Thames. So is brought to a fitting conclusion the four and a-half years' existence of the No. 2 New Zealand General Hospital, through which 27,000 New Zealand patients have passed. The banner is now resting in one of the oldest churches in England, beside two crosses cut in a stone pillar by Crusaders.
