Max THOMPSON, US Navy WW2 - YOUNG family - Pat, Gyann ? - Carol On 7 February there was an article in the "Dominion" titled "Looking for his lost love - with wife's OK" about a former American Navy man, Garth POWELL, who has returned to New Zealand to look for a Kiwi girl he courted during WW2. There are messages following the online article on the "Stuff" website recording that though the lady concerned is deceased, Garth has met up up with her family. Another American, posting as "copymarcus", was prompted to post a message saying that someone from New Zealand was trying to contact his father Max THOMPSON, also a US Navy WW2 veteran, a few years ago. He wrote >OK NZ... My father, Max THOMPSON, visited your great nation many >times during WWII while in the US navy (1942-1945). He passed away >30 years ago. > >In about 2012 my mother reported getting two calls from a man in NZ. >Sounded like the guy was looking for my father; perhaps a lost son, >OR just researching someone his family knew from the war. > >Mom was up in age and each time Mom suggested the guy from NZ call >later - she was "hoping" one of her children would be there to vet >the call. End of the day.... we never heard anything else. > >We think our father was good friends with a family by the last name of YOUNG. > >He served on the USS McCauley and the USS American Legion and often >spoke of friends in NZ. > >Some of the names were Pat, Gyann (not sure of spelling) and a lady >by the name of Carol.. > >If any of this rings a bell with you - PLEASE respond! Thank you! When asked if he knew what port/part of NZ his father visited he added >Our dad was in NZ on-and-off from the US's entry into the Pacific >arena until 1945. > >He was on the US McCauley that was in Wellington in 1942. The ship >was also in New Caledonia. It sank in the Pacific on June 30, 1943. > >Dad was then transferred to the USS American Legion, which spent >time in Wellington and other portions of New Zealand until the end >of the war. > >I am not sure if he would have been in a hospital, but did hear >stories about R&R in your great country. Best regards! Anyone interested in contacting this chap, presumably a Mr THOMPSON, could do so by posting a message below his message following the article below http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/65893575/Looking-for-his-lost-love-with-wifes-OK or by contacting Andrea O'Neil, the Dominion reporter, directly. Hope this rings some bells, and leads to another successful contact. Graham Hoult Kirwee, Canterbury.

Can someone help plse, in this newspaper New Zealand Herald, 17 November 1928 A WHALER'S MEMORIES. RUSSELL IN THE 'THIRTIES* GILBERT MAIR'S STATION. THE TE WAHAPU PINE. HISTORICAL FLAGSTAFF "I was told that my grandfather (William Cook) worked at the building of the Herald. Probably he did, as he was living at the Bay of Islands when that vessel was on the stocks. Yet I never heard him mention it, This William Cook and wife Tiraha had upwards of 13 children, I would like to attach this article to Gilberts place in the tree, but from whom does he descend.? I looked at several William Cooks trees on Ancestry but did not find one with a Mair in it. A daughter of William and Tiraha married into my Howe family,so it's not a close relation. Google does not find a connection either. Does anyone on this list have the genealogy please. thks penne
Clan Johnston/e, descendants of one of the Border riding Clans, is coming to Dunedin in May. The NZ Clan Johnston/e Assn. is to hold its members' annual social get-together and AGM in the Edinburgh Room, Kingsgate Hotel, Dunedin, 11.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m., SATURDAY, MAY 9. NZ Commissioner Les Hewett, Newsletter Editor, and Genealogy Officer, and other executive members will be in attendance and non-members are welcome to join us and learn more, perhaps, of their Scottish roots and heritage. Les will be available during Friday, 8th, and Sunday, 10th, to meet with any elderly or disabled family members who can't make the meeting (within reason) and contact can be made at ljhewett@ihug.co.nz This is the first time the Association has met so far South and we do look forward to the opportunity to meet our members and prospective members over this weekend. We are well aware of the large number of Johnston/es who arrived early in Otago and Southland and contributed to the development of the Provinces over many years.
Thanks to listers who replied promptly. Les H.

Thank you Olwyn for the lengthy post (some I have removed in this reply, to make it shorter) The Annie Howe in your posting was the daughter in law of my William Howe and Ann nee Williams. Bernard G Howe was another son,he and his wife Emma nee Rowe had the Post Office at Omapere, with all my Howes, and also some related Howes hopping the ditch later on, to say nothing of the Williams they just about ran the Russell areas, and so little in the newspapers, or in publications, about the very earliest arrivals. yet another relation Capt Edward Bolger seems to have purchased quite a lot of land in the north pre 1850, and had two blocks at TePuna one in the vicinity of Whale Bay, hard to see on the small map I have. Also several blocks with old Maori names even more difficult to work out. William was a sea captain, and I am sure he would have had connections with the missionaries just two bays away. Appreciate your info ,something to get my thoughts around. cheers penne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Olwyn Whitehouse via" <new-zealand@rootsweb.com> To: "new-zealand" <NEW-ZEALAND@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 09, 2015 5:11 PM Subject: [nz] Penne asked Cape Howe and Howe Rock - don't know who they werenamed after. > > New Zealand Pilot 1883 > http://preview.tinyurl.com/nyns9yy > > Cape Wiwiki is at the entrance to the Bay of Islands and forms the western > entrance point, is a steep bold headland, its summit, mount Pocock, being > 843 feet high.
