    3. Yes, that seems to ring a bell with me too - I grew up in the 1940/50s and my memory is of number plates being orange with black letters - or rather, numerals. 3. Thanks Bruce, and thanks Gavin - that was a great find! Unfortunately though it has posed another question or 2. I found a photo on the internet with a truck from the 1930's that clearly showed the number plate as *91.769*. The style as per the /motorauction /site, suggests that the vehicle was registered during the 1929-1930 year. All 4 of "my" trucks though, have a registration number that is pre-fixed by the letter H - so I have for example *H5.898*. I believe the style of the plate (even though the photos are in black+white) would suggest registration between 1934-1935. So I now need to know what the H stood for. I have tried MOTAT, NZTA, Archives NZ and the Auckland Library Research Centre . . . all to no avail. No-one seems to know anything about transport licensing back then. NZTA says they did not keep info on vehicles once they were de-registered, so in all senses, these vehicles "never existed" as far as NZTA are concerned! Sad. Did the H indicate the particular use of type of vehicle? Or did it indicate the registration area? There were 9 registration districts set up in NZ at the time. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Beth On 5/03/2015 3:32 p.m., Gavin W Petrie via wrote: > Hello Beth > > The link below has all the number plate details. > > http://www.motorauction.co.nz/forum/showthread.php?tid=2030 > > Regards > Gavin > > > > On 4/03/2015 2:22 p.m., aotueka via wrote: >> Hello. I'll be able to put the family , my cousins, at ease , but an amazingly secretive man he must have been. He actually died in Sydney from a blood clot he developed when hit by a horse. The family lived in Rose Bay. He was married in Melbourne to my great aunt, Marion McKenzie and I have a heap of postcards Marion used to write to my grandmother, her sister. Thankyou all again Cheers Chris Vic

I have a list of these changes somewhere but may take a while to locate it. I have been told there was something about a warrant and he fled to NSW. I don't know whether he had any children in NZ. He came from Bristol. He also married in NSW and had a child who my cousin mentioned but doesn't know the name of and then he came to Victoria and married my great aunt Marion McKenzie in 1912. This has come at a great shock to our family, but I know of other men being bigamists . Any help gratefully appreciated. Cheers Chris Aus

Here is my list so far. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nzbound/vicksburg1867.htm Thanks. Olwyn You may ask, why is a ship is always referred to in a feminine tense? A ship is always she because there is always a great deal of bustle about her. There is usually a gang of men about. She has a waist and stays. It takes a lot of paint to keep her good looking. It is not the initial expense that breaks you it is the upkeep. She can be all decked out. It takes an experienced man to handle her, and without a man at the helm she is absolutely uncontrollable. She shows her topsides, hides her bottom, and when coming into port always heads for the buoys.

    1. [nz] Smith - Clareville
    2. Adele Pentony-Graham via
    3. Happy St. David's Day, 1st March. This family puzzles me, are they connected please, or has a researcher got their wires crossed? One grave at Clareville is for James Smith who died 31st Dec. 1879, his wife, Ellen died 10th January 1900. Lovely marble headstone for them, it does have under James details, TARATAHI. Further down the cemetery we have another large SMITH Memorial with the following names: James (Smith) 23rd march 1903. Sarah died 22nd May 1950 Leonard. died 1887. small child Elsie died 1890. 6 weeks old. Stanley died 1895. 3 weeks old Leslie died 1898, aged 16 days Thomas Waldin died 1894. he had 150 acres at Clareville. Sarah Ann Waldin married James Smith. down at the bottom of the headstone as there are a number of names listed, as Sydney Ormond Smith. died 21 Jan 1979. Another Smith grave is for Hohn at the top of the cemetery. But my query is, James And Ellen are they connected to the Smith family in the large grave please... Now the other day I did have a Pain family member as Smith is with the Pain but the James and Ellen we are not sure if they belong to the other Smith, puzzled, so am I! But this list is from a friend whose ex husband has Smith with his family here at Clareville also Adams.. I do have more names for the Pain Smith family, but wont confuse you at present, more concerned to find out if James and Ellen are with the other family! No issue on the headstone which is unusual... When I had the visitor, I took him around the Clareville area to show where the family had lived, Henry Farr Smith and a James Smith, Henry was on two properties, one on corner of Neich's Lane and then over the road, he was a bootmaker, buried at Bolton St. Cemetery. Notes say that James and Ellen sailed on the Oriental leaving Plymouth 1841. then mention of Mary Sharp, but I thought she was with another James Smith! One James lived up Chester Road, died early, got shot, then another one lived at Grassmere, is he connected to this family. Thanks...
